"The ocean is full of things that would like to kill you, and other things that would ignore or not understand you, and then eventually kill you... because they do not have the same understanding or valuation of life and death as humans.

There are still other things that you would probably kill simply because you think they are beautiful, and you want to possess beautiful things because you believe that beauty and sentience are mutually exclusive." - Joseph Fink

How do you feel your desire to possess something or someone has impacted your interpersonal relationships?

Any thoughts on the quote?

I love sharks. They're so much like me. They don't really ever sleep.

A butterfly is a beautiful, delicate creature. It has to be free to live. You cannot capture it and hold it as your own.

Relationships are like that as well. We have to hold the people we love loosely, not trying to own them, possess them or control them. If we do this, we destroy them. Even if we can tie them to us completely, what is left is not the REAL person but only a shadow of who they really are.

Oops .. Shift just starting .. Will be back lol.. More to say

How do you feel your desire to possess something or someone has impacted your interpersonal relationships?

I hate possessions.
The really nice ones tend to be heavy.
I don't like cheap possessions.
From having to move heavy things in the past I am lazy and don't like to move heavy things.
I move around a lot.
I don't date much.

Any thoughts on the quote?

"The ocean is full of things that would like to kill you"
I don't think things in oceans would "like" to kill me.
At best they would like to not feel hungry or threatened.
I don't believe they hold any personal animosity towards me where my personal death would be something they feel one way or another.

Although I like to hedge my bets by never swimming in anything but pools.
Last time I was in Virginia Beach I saw a pod of dolphins that looked really dark, like they were wearing ninja outfits, but it was overcast so maybe the clouds just made them look smoky.
They were looking at me all funny and making weird flipper gestures I think were gang signs or Romany curses.

they do not have the same understanding or valuation of life and death as humans.

Is that a good thing or bad?
I don't know many squid working on atom bombs, setting up gas chambers, or inventing 72 oz big gulps with fried cheese crisco dogs.

But who's to say they wouldn't if they could?
Thank god sea creatures don't have opposable thumbs.

Of course that would piss off the whales, since they couldn't grasp their penises to masturbate since their flipper hands wouldn't be long enough.
Divers would come across them on the ocean floor, on their backs, straining "ugh, ergh, agh, just another inch, one more inch!" and saying to each other "you know, if I was human and could reach my own penis I'd probably never leave the ocean all day."
That's a reason to invent the atom bomb right there.

Other than that, I think it's a pretty stupid quote.
Mostly because
you want to possess beautiful things because you believe that beauty and sentience are mutually exclusive.

I think people would be MORE inclined to kill things that were sentient and beautiful if there were absolutely no consequences beyond their own morality and feelings of guilt engendered by fellow man.

Personally, I think all the anthropomorphizing done by Disney and cartoons has been to RATIONALIZE bad behavior towards animals, to justify doing more of it. Like create zoo prisons, and indentured emotional servitude via "pets."

I think people are looking for sentience in beautiful things so they can control it and use it more than looking for beautiful things and trying to pretend there is no sentience.

Love this !

Are we verging on bestiality here..
or are we talking about wanting to drink people and objects in through our eyes and let them swim around in our heads....winking

Desire is a personal thing. 'One man's meat is another man's poison'

I guess when I desire my man, I do want to spend as much time as possible with him, so is that possessing his time or is it mutual, in the sense that I want to give myself totally to him too ?...

I refer to my loved ones as 'yummy and good enough to eat without salt' so it is like a form of possession and sounds murderous rofl

@ciretom I nearly wet myself reading your post and I would pay good money to be on that beach seeing all that action rofl
