Thoughts adrift
Inching ever closer To the gates of the past Where so many painful memories reside She tries franticially to turn them around Nothing No one can bring her back Gliding closer still to the gates of the past Thick dark clouds hang low in the sky Stepping inside The wind begins to howl After twenty years of running She must finally face them The horrible events that hurled her Into a world of cold bitter hatred Head bent against the vicious wind She slinks passed the face of her Uncle Feeling the pain swell up inside As it had that very day Drawing a deep breath She continued on Balling her fists in a white knuckled grip The only way to end this pain Is to stare her fear in the face Hair whipping in the wind She runs faster Coming into view A flag draped casket Surrounded by a sea of uniforms No longer able to run She dropped to her knees Weeping uncontrollably After a moment she screamed Now really is the time to say goodbye A horrific nightmare this is not Finally after a moment The skies began to clear All the hellish visions have finally disappeared Glancing back she saw the gate was locked Her heart fluttered Every step lighter than the last She had done it Faced every fear Every heartache Of a dark once forgotten past |
