its bothering sometimes but its not for me to judge coz even i am not perfect in such area. Even the best writers, editors and teachers commit errors yet they don't look dumb.. for me it always comes down to our own perspective.. intelligence is not measured by how good we are in spelling or grammar whats important is that the statement is comprehensible.

I teach the language and train highly intelligent and successful people, who in turn focus on what they are trying to communicate and/or convey in order to be both effective and communicative. My focus is on improving their language ability so that they achieve their deliverables, present their product or service in the English speaking world, or to improve their negotiations/meeting skills. Most of my students speak a minimum of 3 languages fluently and perfect spelling therefore doesn't play a pivotal part in cinching a project but effective communication and knowing the local culture does.

IMHO I feel, as some of the posters above me do, that media representatives, reporters etc....need to deliver perfect, well structured, preferably perfectly executed language and since it is their profession, spelling mistakes in their mother tongue certainly irks me and is a no-no! On M2, one has to factor in that members are here to communicate, where their electronic devices 'feel' that they can predict or better our thoughts  and that many (I don't know the stats) members are not English native speakers - so passing judgement would be ludicrous, insensitive and over-critical. flowerforyou

My teachers back in the dark ages spent a lot of time teaching me correct grammar so the least I can do is use it. I used to know how to spell, too. Now I have spell check to correct my errors.

If I see someone making a lot of grammatical errors they do appear ignorant to me. I am even more annoyed by people who intentionally misspell words to be cool.

My ex sometimes misspelled words to be funny. But I got used to it.

In both the forums and the personal messages we receive

Does it annoy you? Or do you not care.....shades

Does it affect/effect your opinion of the author? scared

Opinions/thoughts...............waving

If I cannot read comments without needing to take time to decipher their correct spelling and usage in a sentence therefore the meaning possibly, probably, maybe or not used in or out of context... I scan past them. I just figure the author wouldn't care if I replied anyway.

I rarely read messages sent to me because I can tell by the initial limited approach if they would interest me enough to read the rest of their post.

No, it doesn't annoy me because I don't care about messages I can't read to begin with.

We have many members here from many different countries who aren't as learned in the art of writing/speaking English, so I think patience and tolerance of our cultural differences is warranted.

There are many folks born here in the States, who, for whatever reason, also aren't as well educated in spelling and proper punctuation, and others who just don't care one way or another. Either way, IMO it is not a reflection of their character, their intentions, integrity, or what is in their heart, and those are the things I think that are most important.
. Just like me , I can read well but to write correct english is the problem.but am still trying .good topic

I can't deny that I find poor spelling and grammar pretty off-putting (typos are different).

It's not that I necessarily assume the person is less intelligent; it's more that I find illiterate posts irksome to read. I don't want to have to strain myself to figure out what a person is saying. I'm lazy. :D

It is human nature to make a mistake. Also in 2014 human kind Is very dependent on technology... So that doesnt help. Just think how well we will spell in the future as technology involves.

if bad grammar would render one as dumb we could consider us all dumb than
cause all of us could have bad grammar in other languages just as well
you guys don't know that some people here didn't have the chance to learn English properly and not by their fault
some who have bad grammar can actually speak few languages how would you consider yourself compared to them?

and some have wisdom that you and I could only envy
so if you're one of those who said yes, I'd put you in same list of dumbs as well and probably one of the biggest one too.

My Webster dictionary is the thickest book I own. How anyone expects me to fully memorize and effectively apply all the contents and then get the grammar perfect just to shoot the breeze with people I will most likely never meet, do not pay my bills, and could care less if I or my family lives or die amazes me. ROFLMBO.

And the whole thing of fearing to appear dumb is about the last thing I could think of to be concerned about.
