Any suggestions for an upgrade from a GTX 8400 nVidia that won't break the bank but allow me to play some of the newer GRAW, Call of Duty and Splinter Cell games.

Sorry no one helped you. That is an old card. More info is needed. What size power supply do you have? What kind of computer case do you have? what settings do you want to run? What kind of power connectors do you have available on your power supply? Also what do you consider breaking the bank? You can get a GTX 660 for $200 and that will destroy your old card.

2 biggest stoppers are your power supply and your case.

I can install them and troubleshoot but I cannot tell you which ones are better to upgrade. I would have to ask the person I was buying them from in order for good advice.

I went and got a GeForce 650 with 2B DDR3 ram. Only $100 on ebay and no shipping. Thanks for the info. Just as an aside the numbering/naming conventions on video cards is annoying. an 8400 is less powerful than a 650 which is less powerful than an 8600 etc. It would be nice if the big mfrs standardized their number system. Even if you go to their web sites they obfuscate.

Yea its pretty lame. I mean they change so often that they need a way to show a difference in the series and technology though.

http://www.hwcompare.com/13596/geforce-8800-gtx-vs-geforce-gtx-650/

that is the site I used to compare your two cards if you want to do it again in the future.

http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/

I also use this site when deciding what card to get next.

for starters.

You need to have a 30o watt power supply.

best to have 500 watt.

for when you get a pny or evga = nvidia chip set just cheaper $35 at Best Buy.

PCI EXPRESS :

http://computer.howstuffworks.com/pci-express-pictures.htm

AGP:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accelerated_Graphics_Port

Either way you need the power

on the side of the video box it says a minimum of 300 watt. Thats just for the Video card alone. So its best to go 500 watt again antex cool master $75 tops ATX design . If thats what your motherboard is. I hope you dont have a dell. If you do - thats not good news.

Gefore 650

6 = the series number ( 600 series)

610,620,630 = Entry level cards (Facebook,flashgames, stream video)

640,650,660 = Mid Level cards( general Gaming)

670,680,690 = High end cards ( High end gaming, Video Processing)

Last generation it was 4 numbers

8= Series number(8000 Series)

8100,8200,8300 = low end

8400,8500,8600 = mid level

8700,8800,8900 = high level

the GTX,gt and all that nonsense is jsut different specs/chip sets and power usuage but thats the general.

Not sure what nvidia will do after 900 series They kinda mess themselves up trying to be fancy and starting in the thousands..

Yeah they started with Amigas . Oh by the way. ALtex is good over here in Texas. Best buy is 35 . Which is very good for a Video Card.

You have to look up the specs for the motherboard and see what video card is compatable.

newegg.com is probably the best place to get computer stuff in and around the US. Upgrading the video card might help with games but your cpu may bottleneck your performance so a full system upgrade might be better. My nvidia 9800 gtx+ managed to run all games fine until I upgraded it last year. Consoles are pretty much limiting the pc requirements for games which allows older computers to still play modern games. Hardware development has also been stuck in a rut for quite a few years unlike in the early 2000s where major improvements took place yearly.

No need to get superior if a woman knows more than you, and has the ultimate correct answer..happy

It all depends on the mother board capabilities to what you WANT to run for what. Bus speeds and AGP and video co processors and built in RAM.

Naw, you are the loose loser, obviously not even English grammar can hold you back, being so syntax like.
