What would you consider to be self sustainable? off grid, grow most of you food, no dept, bater/ trade, permaculture, prepping is there anyone who even thinks about these things. I understand that every generation thinks it will be the last but what fun it would be if you didn't have to participate in the rat race What would you do could you even imagine it?

I am private, as much as I Can be,

but I am very conscious of being one small interconnected part of a big world, and I wouldn't want it otherwise

being 'off the grid' doesn't appeal to me,,,

IF I were to consider someone completely 'self sustained', they would have to have cut down their own trees built their own home, created their own heat and energy source for the home, get their water from some 'natural' source, create their own natural toilet paper,,build their own plumbing with 'natural' resources,,,hunt all the food they eat, ID say grow their fruits and vegetables but Im not sure how easy that is to do without the transportation to travel somewhere to someplace that sells seeds,,,lol

I emulate those who could pull it off and ENJOY it,, but I am too accustomed to indoor plumbing and air conditioning,,,

I see them every day pushing shopping carts full of junk. I'd say that it kinda sucks.

Sure, if you really want to do the extra work in order to live "off the grid". Then again, some people enjoy having to work from sunrise to sunset without taking any vacations. indifferent

the government won't let you live "off the grid" ... people have tried, and wound up dead, jail or in a mental institution... good luck if you try tho...

I'm a prepper and have 30 boxes of food, 20 cases of water and a desire to just disappear. Oh and a lot of ammo.

Watching the series "Survivors" (the original BBC series from the 70s that is, not the US version) taught me one thing: we know jack shite about living independently.
My dad would've managed. He has a lot of knowledge of herbs, plants, trees and so on, knows how to grow greens, had chickens, pigeons, rabbits, could prep them for food as well. I grew up with his knowledge, but as I didn't do much with it, I lost it.

I tried making fire last summer, failed abysmally. My hand/fingers can hack it, not enough strength. Tried the hand/bow drill and the firestick, neither worked for me. Got some good sparks of the firestick, they landed on dry grassy stuff, but no fire. I got a bit of smoke once, for a few seconds, that was it. I was well p|$$ed off, can tell you that! I do have plans to try the hand/bow drill again though.

I think maybe Americans will do quite good in general as you're far more used to the great outdoors and hiking etc. We haven't got much of a great outdoors here, country is too small and too crammed with ppl, houses, roads etc.

I am very interested in it, would've loved to do some Ray Mears' workshops on bush-craft, survival etc. But I haven't got the money to do them, nor do I think my body is cut out for that stuff (hyper-laxity is a ***** at times)

I'll never forget this part in "Survivors" where they finally managed to get a field prepped and got grain going, only to find out it was the wrong type of grain, not edible for humans. As no one had any knowledge of these things, they scr ewed up terribly and didn't have any food for winter.

Trick number one ... Squirrel away a few dozen cheap butane lighters. They will be worth more than their weight in gold.
