Well, then don't be surprised if I don't reply. Another thing, as a non-native speaker of English it might be helpful to know and understand the connotation of a word in English. If you think it is respectful and everyone perceives it as unpleasant/too familiar/patronizing or whatever, well ... then you're seriously miscommunicating. That was the reason why I, a non-native speaker myself, asked the question. By the way, if you mean to be respectful, why use these angry emoticons all the time? |

When you don't know the culture of someone; it's best not to address someone in the familiar state like dear. Dear is a familiar term and if you don't know the person; you shouldn't address them as it. You may think it respectful but other cultures don't agree. Best thing is simply don't address them in any way. Just say Hi. |

I've noticed it's usually used by older men when talking to a younger woman, or by men from other countries, like someone else said, usually scammers. I don't care for the term, I think it sounds condescending and overly familiar, it's better to just say hi, especially if you don't know the other person.
