Topic: Black Americans are doing worse. | |
---|---|
The title of this thread comes from an article published on 27 January 2013 by Politics365.com.
Here is an excerpt from the article: On Meet the Press today, NAACP Chief Ben Jealous said, ”Right now when you look at joblessness in this country — the country is pretty much back to where it was when this President started. White people are doing a bit better. Black folks are doing a full point worse.”
The article is written by Politics365 managing editor Lauren Victoria Burke. ![]() Lauren Victoria Burke Here is more from Burke's article: In January 2009 when President Obama took office the Black unemployment rate was 12.7%. The best Black jobless number during Obama’s first term was 12.9% in November 2012. The worst during Obama’s first term was September 2011 with 16.7% — the highest Black unemployment number since 1983 according to the Department of Labor.
The worst Black jobless number during President Bush’s eight years in office was 12.1% in December 2008. The best jobless number for Blacks during the Bush years was 7.7% in February 2001 and 7.7% again in August 2007. Here are statements that a couple of black American men left in the "Comments" section following the article. - "I'm BETTER off than I was four years ago because I AM BETTER. I also moved where there is more economic opportunity (from Atlanta to DFW). However I had a friend who reached back to help pull me up. Helped me relocate financially and gave me moral support. A lack of community is partly responsible for these numbers. NOT the government or Obama. WE ARE THE ANSWER...and at times the problem/oppressor." - "Let us understand that Racism still exist. With that said, We (Blacks) have to understand that we have to stay out of situations that can hinder us in the future. For instance, dropping out of grammar and high school probably won't benefit you in the future. Having a rap sheet the size of the equator also won't help you out either. When I hear Black folks say "Obama need to do something for us", I say What? What would you suggest? Because lets be real, a lot of our issues are self inflicted." Any thoughts on this topic? |

The majority is doing worse.
Education is incredibly expensive, urban sprawl has depleted the tax base, and we're devolving into a service economy. These are the times to renew your spirit. Never put your faith in institutions. |

The majority is doing worse. Education is incredibly expensive, urban sprawl has depleted the tax base, and we're devolving into a service economy. These are the times to renew your spirit. Never put your faith in institutions. You're right. Ironically, Barry is granting blanket amnesty to Law breakers while a big chunk of Americans are out of work. Somethin' just ain't right with that picture. |

Something I have seen going on for years is illegal aliens replacing blacks (and whites too for that matter) in the construction industry. We are talking masons, concrete finishers, carpenters, and all the other skilled trades. If the illegals left tomorrow, there would be millions of jobs for citizens.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/01/27/study-nearly-half-are-overqualified-for-jobs/1868817/
Study: Nearly half are overqualified for their jobs Nearly half of working Americans with college degrees are in jobs for which they're overqualified, a new study out Monday suggests. The study, released by the non-profit Center for College Affordability and Productivity, says the trend is likely to continue for newly minted college graduates over the next decade. "It is almost the new normal," says lead author Richard Vedder, an Ohio University economist and founder of the center, based in Washington. The number of Americans whose highest academic degree was a bachelor's grew 25% to 41 million from 2002 to 2012, statistics released last week from the U.S. Census Bureau show. The number with associate's degrees increased 31%, while the number of Americans for whom the highest level of education attainment was a master's or doctorate degree grew fastest of all — 45% and 43%, respectively. Earnings in 2011 averaged $59,415 for people with any earnings ages 25 and older whose highest degree was a bachelor's degree, and $32,493 for people with a high school diploma but no college, the Census data show. Vedder, whose study is based on 2010 Labor Department data, says the problem is the stock of college graduates in the workforce (41.7 million) in 2010 was larger than the number of jobs requiring a college degree (28.6 million). That, he says, helps explain why 15% of taxi drivers in 2010 had bachelor's degrees vs. 1% in 1970. Among retail sales clerks, 25% had a bachelor's degree in 2010. Less than 5% did in 1970. "There are going to be an awful lot of disappointed people because a lot of them are going to end up as janitors," Vedder says. In 2010, 5% of janitors, 115,520 workers, had bachelor's degrees, his data show. Matt Moberg, who provides training for the Cleaning Management Institute in Latham, N.Y., says the percentage of degree-holding janitors was probably smaller before the recession, but those with four-year degrees likely are business owners or workers in online degree programs. Vedder's findings are at odds with a report released last week by a pro-business public policy organization that seeks to boost financial aid for low-income students. "Right now you can look around the world and you can see a lot of high-tech, high-value high-productivity jobs that we are not doing in this country, in part because our country does not have the requisite skills," says Joe Minarik, of the Washington-based Committee for Economic Development. Foregoing college "is not what we should aspire to." Story Highlights * Many with degrees will end up as janitors, the study's author says * Others argue that high-value jobs go begging * People with college degrees still earn more, Census data show |

I know of some who claim to be so over-freakin'-qualified, it's beneath them to do menial labor jobs. Like work fast food. Unemployment welfare extensions pay too well.
That doesn't apply to folks who are newly laid off or their jobs have recently been terminated or sent overseas. Those unemployment welfare extensions need to cease. Them suns-a-beeches get hungry, they will scrub toilets if it meant that's were the money for their next meal comes from. Then, let some Illegal try take their toilet job. They will fight to the death to keep the Illegals out. Unemployment-welfar extensions are creating a generation of lazy fkers. ![]() ![]() |

Uh, what does people being "over-qualified" for jobs have to do the topic of my OP?
|

|

The working class in this country has been losing ground since the late
sixties. It's not "the administration", it's the top one percent that controls the economy. |

Uh, what does people being "over-qualified" for jobs have to do the topic of my OP? As in, not willing to work. Unemployment Welfare pays better. PS The Corporate farms are hiring Illegals to do every aspect. from cultivatineg to delivery. Haliberton used them to rebuild NO and they stayed. Refineries and oil drilling operations hire them. |

Jobs in America
It is absolutely amazing what some people will do to make a living in this economy. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and we have not seen this kind of desperation for jobs in America since the Great Depression of the 1930s. What some people are willing to put up with just to bring home a paycheck these days will totally shock you. Would you personally train your replacement from China even though you knew he was about to take your job? Would you trade sex for a job? There are people out there actually doing all these things and worse. Every night in America, millions upon millions of people roll around endlessly in their beds and stare at their ceilings for hours because they can't sleep. They are sick to their stomachs because their money is gone and nobody will hire them. They can't provide even the basics for their families and they feel worthless. Unemployment can be absolutely soul crushing and it can suck the life right out of you. Things were supposed to be better by now, but they aren't. The month after Barack Obama took office the unemployment rate broke the 8 percent barrier and it has stayed above it ever since. But the truth is that the "official" unemployment number greatly understates the real amount of suffering that is going on out there. In reality, the percentage of working age Americans that have jobs is lower today than when the last recession ended. There are millions upon millions of Americans that are desperate for some hope, and there is no hope on the horizon. In fact, things are going to be getting a whole lot worse for the U.S. economy. theeconomiccollapseblog.com |

When I hear Black folks say "Obama need to do something for us", I say What? What would you suggest? Because lets be real, a lot of our issues are self inflicted." Any thoughts on this topic? I think the magic of numbers is they can be viewed from so many different perspectives. looking at the trends, for instance from january of 2007 when the recession began to january of 2009 we saw a HUGE spike in u nemployment 7.9 percent to 12.7 percent for blacks and 4.2 percent to 7.1 percent for whites the trend for whites PEAKED in 2009 at 9.3 percent while the trend for blacks continued to grow until it peaked in 2011 at 16.7 percent it has receded to 14.0 for blacks by the end of 2012 and 6.9 percent for whites in summary, when the recession began, whites saw a spike of nearly 3 percent unemployment before Obama took office and blacks saw a spike of nearly 5 percent within obamas first year, the unemployment of whites continued to rise an additional 2 percent ( a total of 5 percent over three years) and blacks continued to rise an additional 4 percent over the first two years of obamas term ( a total of 9 percent in a four year period) since their peaks, whites have seen a roughly 2.5 percent decline in unemployment, while blacks have seen a roughly 2.7 percent decline in unemployment as well I think the recession hit black folks harder and has seen them return to their status of roughly twice the unemployment rate of whites,,,, http://www.dol.gov/_sec/media/reports/BlackLaborForce/BlackLaborForce.pdf |

oh, as far as unemployment, when the recession began, black unemployment spiked FIVE percent in two years (before Obama) and another FOUR percent in the first three years of obama
and then came back down 3 percent in the final year so, as far as the trend(from 2.5 increase yearly, 1.3 increae yearly, to 3.0 decrease yearly) blacks have seen improvement,,, |

Then, pray tell, why are many still bichin' and whining, claiming they're victims.
Soon, they will change from blaming whitey to blaming the Mexicans from keeping them out of jobs. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

so, as far as the trend(from 2.5 increase yearly, 1.3 increae yearly, to 3.0 decrease yearly) blacks have seen improvement,,,
So, are you disagreeing with Ben Jealous? He said that black Americans are currently doing worse. In her article, Burke states, "The worst during Obama’s first term was September 2011 with 16.7% — the highest Black unemployment number since 1983 according to the Department of Labor." So, you are technically correct in saying the unemployment situation for black Americans has improved some. Now, what about the responses to Burke's article that I quote in the OP? One black American man said, "A lack of community is partly responsible for these numbers. NOT the government or Obama. WE ARE THE ANSWER...and at times the problem/oppressor." Another black American man said, "When I hear Black folks say "Obama need to do something for us", I say What? What would you suggest? Because lets be real, a lot of our issues are self inflicted." Do you agree with what these men said? |
