Obamacare vs. Jobs

The law discourages the hiring of full-time employees.

Job seekers will soon have a harder time finding full-time work, thanks to Obamacare. As of 2014, the law will attempt to force employers to provide insurance — but in doing so, it will have the unintended effect of making part-time employees more desirable than full-timers.

That’s because if a business with more than 49 full-time employees fails to offer insurance coverage, it will be required to pay a fine. And the fine will apply starting not with the 50th employee, but with the 31st. At $2,000 per employee after the first 30, these fines add up fast. A business that surpasses the threshold by just one full-time employee will face $40,000 each year in penalties.

Businesses that can easily substitute part-time for full-time labor — in particular restaurants, hotels, and retailers — will have a strong incentive to do so. The Wall Street Journal reports that Carl’s Jr., Hardee’s, Red Lobster, and Olive Garden are already planning to hire part-timers instead of full-timers at some or all of their locations. Other employers will restrict their current full-time employees to 30 hours a week so that they will be considered part-time under the law. And, of course, some businesses will opt to stay smaller. France provides an instructive example: There, 50 employees is the magic threshold for whether labor regulations apply. And — no surprise — the country “has more than 2.4 times as many firms with 49 employees as with 50,” Jed Graham notes in Investor’s Business Daily.


All this is terrible news for an already bleak labor market. Congressional Budget Office director Doug Elmendorf has estimated that Obamacare as a whole will cost something like 800,000 jobs, and a CBO analysis noted the pressure that many companies will face to hire fewer full-time workers.

Young job seekers, already slammed by the bad economy, will be among the most harmed. Earlier this year, the Associated Press found that more than half of those under 25 with a bachelor’s degree were either jobless or underemployed. The Obamacare penalty will cut full-time jobs in some of the primary employment havens of struggling graduates.

Workers under 25 account for more than 28 percent of all retail workers, according to the National Retail Federation. And earlier this year, the Associated Press reported:


In the last year, [degree holders under 25] were more likely to be employed as waiters, waitresses, bartenders and food-service helpers than as engineers, physicists, chemists and mathematicians combined (100,000 versus 90,000). There were more working in office-related jobs such as receptionist or payroll clerk than in all computer professional jobs (163,000 versus 100,000). More also were employed as cashiers, retail clerks and customer representatives than engineers (125,000 versus 80,000).

But youngsters aren’t the only ones in trouble. Obamacare’s penalties will also be especially devastating in the service industry. Only 41.5 percent of employers in this industry provided insurance coverage last year. But these jobs have been another refuge in hard times; personal-service employment actually increased by 2 percent between 2007 and 2010.

It’s becoming increasingly clear that Obamacare will result in fewer full-time jobs for low-wage Americans. Wasn’t that precisely the demographic that Obamacare was supposed to help?

Don't forget to mention the implications in the Obamacare program that states that every American will be forced to have a micro-chip implanted by a certain time....and if you don't comply it will put you out of work.

No problem. I just don't understand how people don't see this coming. How can they not realize the repercussions this can cause. Obama (in my opinion, and many others) is more likely than not to be a terrorist implant. He's dishonest and corrupt. I can't understand how Americans can allow him to stay in office. Why hasn't he been impeached yet? Has our government really failed us? The first day of him back in office and he's already selling America up the river to third world countries. As he is doing with selling our oil and gas rights off to China. That is worth billions of dollars that could be used to support our country and getting us out of debt. America has the means to take care of itself with it's own resources, but if he sells it all off then we are screwed.

I apologize for the rant...as you can tell, I'm not very fond of Obama. He's going to run our country into the ground; and many refuse to see it and sit in denial that it could be true. I would love to say that I am wrong, and we are wrong, and hope the chaos never comes to be so....but if we're not wrong, then I guess it's safe to assume that America will go to war to fight for their freedom yet again.

And to all of those who voted for him back in office...well, they brought this upon themselves. I feel the only way for them to see the truth of it all is for something tragic to happen...Given time, Obama will make it all so by the end of his term.

Now, this post is mainly based on my opinion and research I find on this imposter President. Sometimes, it's the slightest things that seem harmless can really do the most damage in the long run. His acts that may be small and insignificant can mean a lot when everything comes to light someday.

"Atlas Shrugged" was a very well written book. So many have misinterpreted her philosophy and message from that novel. I haven't read any of her other work, sadly. But you're right, Ayn Rand had predicted something of the sort. I watched a documentary on her and what she went through in Russia. She claimed to see similar signs happening in America and the path it was headed down as she had experienced in Russia. If that is the case, things don't look so bright for our future.

However, if things do get really bad, I'm sure America won't go down without a fight. At least I won't. I'll fight for my freedom until my dying breath. No one is going to take that away from me.

It would be wise for everyone to stay current. To keep up with what goes on in this world today. Otherwise, we lay blind to the things that are really going on; and it could hurt us. It's almost like admitting that just because someone has a smile on their face they are happy and live a perfect life; which would be far from the truth. Anyone can put a smile upon their face to hide the dysfunctional life and dark motives beneath the surface. It's the same with our government. They show you what they want you to see...but what about the things they hide from us?

What game does the government play at? What strings do they pull to get their way and what they want? How many cover ups do they have just to portray a lie to comfort the citizens? What does this mean for us? And what are Obama's TRUE motives?

Perhaps this is what we get for trusting someone who promises change....but never clarifies what kind of change.....so what 'CHANGE' does Obama have for us? So many questions that lead to more questions....I guess we'll find out the answers when we see them come to pass.

Corporations have been trying to screw employees for decades now. I know a lot of people who routinely have their hours cut or held back so they won't qualify for insurance benefits...This practice has been going on for a long time...When employees get close to retirement some corporations start "messing with them" hoping they won't be able to stand the "heat" and will quit before they are due to retire...Everything hasn't been on the "up and up" or fair for a long time...Corporations can do whatever they want today. It's all about greed and profit compared to the "old days" when I was younger. (Back in the 50's and 60's.)...So much propoganda is put out today and so much of it is "slanted."...When I was younger and attending college I worked as a food server in CA. Back then restaurants paid food servers less than minimum wage. When a bill came up to force restaurants to pay servers minimum wage there was a huge "stink" about it...The Restaurant Association insisted this would lead to layoffs and closures and "you name it!" They predicted Armagedon...But it all worked out just fine. Most restaurants raised their prices a teeny weeny bit. (5 cents to a quarter per item. Nothing major!)...Life went on okay... The "sky is falling" and Armagedon tactics are still used by politicians and corporations today. It's easy to scare and manipulate the masses. (One way or the other!)

Exactly. Everyone tends to get all negative and begins to predict Armagedon and whine before they give change a chance.

Want change? Then get ready for it. You are going to see a lot more and you will have a lot more to whine about in the near future. So much so that you will look back on today as the good old days.

People are so damn spoiled.

Employers have been hiring only part time to avoid paying benefits for at least 20 years or so. That is not new at all. Who ever ( Jillian Kay Melchior) came up with that bright new complaint/article must have been living under a rock for the last 20 years.

Oh well, she gets paid to write negative articles against Obama and anything he tries to change.
