An excerpt from a CNN story:

More than 700 years after William Wallace died fighting for Scottish independence, and more than 300 years after Scotland and England came together in a United Kingdom, a new agreement could lead to an independent Scotland.

British Prime Minister David Cameron and his Scottish counterpart, First Minister Alex Salmond, signed a deal in Edinburgh, Scotland, on Monday paving the way for Scots to vote on independence from the United Kingdom, Cameron's office announced on Twitter. The referendum, expected to be held in 2014, would allow Scots a straight yes-or-no vote on staying in the union.

Here is some Scottish trivia:

Scotland and England were completely separate nations until Scotland's King James VI inherited the throne of England from England's Queen Elizabeth I, at which time Scotland's King James VI became England's King James I.

That's right. A Scottish king took over England.

His son James VII & II got into trouble when he favored the Roman Catholic Church over the Church of England and Protestant churches. He was removed from his thrones by force, at which time the thrones were given to his son-in-law, the German Prince William III of Orange.

On 1 May 1707 the Treaty of Union resulted in the political union of Scotland and England, a.k.a. the UK.

Obviousely that decision falls in the hands of the people of Scotland. If they vote yes to independence, nothing nor no one could deter that decision. Should they? I see no reason why not, a peoples destiny is defined by their ability at self determination assured only by independence. If they choose not to seek independence, that is a decision they will also have their right to choose. One thing is all pertinent, either which way, it must be decided with one unified voice, that would be the best for all.

Way back when Scotland lost its independence, plenty of Highlanders decided to immigrate to the thirteen English colonies in North America. Once there, they worked to give those colonies independence. One of their descendants proclaimed, "Give me liberty", or give me death!"
