Probably shocked by the reality check. They often are sold the myth that every man wants them. Not true. And it is not because you are ugly, stupid, have children, or fill in the black reason. Or because the guy is gay and you just didn't pic up on it which is often something people will say to save face because they are embarrassed. Or the guy is not worthy. Lame but again saving face.

Might have something to do with how you do it. There is a way to say no thank you that lets a person keep their dignity.

Not saying young men generally get this kind of rejection demonstrated all that often. If more desireable men and other women would police their own and reject women that are rude and crude about rejecting men they are just not interested in women would ammend that obnoxious behavior. Hopefully the same is true as men become more accustom to be treating as recipients of invitations rather always the one presenting them.

If someone is presenting you and invitation that you do not want to accept just saying a friendly "thanks for asking but I rather not, I am already committed, or maybe later" puts the choice on your shoulders and is not such a rejection of them over all. NEVER say they are not something they can not change or that had no right to ask you because then you are insulting them and of course they are gong to become defensive.

But some people are just over invested in what they want and you just have to let it go if they can't. The why is they really are disfunctional and that is not your fault.

It depends on when you tell them. If you have lead them in that direction and then switch one moment it's confusing. If its right from the get go thugh then, well there should be no problem, she has no right to be bitter or hateful. Even with the prior no reason for hate over disagreements of wants. That is immature, she could be just defensive and yes feeling rejected will cause emotional reaction.
