The only time I've used Skype is to talk to someone when they were out of the country, as it is free. Didn't use webcams, though, just voice chat. Any other time, it's just easier to use a phone.

I agree. The idea of someone staring at me while Im using my computer is just creepy to me,,,uncomfortable, especially if Im only getting to know them.

Family members I havent seen, are a different matter and we are usually all taking turns in the household speaking to that one person.

Skype is very much like video communications from Star Trek....

and yes, the potential for "cool" is there....but, there is a reason it ain't ever gonna be a smash hit.

Bad hair days

....on Star Trek...no one has a bad hair day, or a giant pimple, or kids screaming in the back ground or the house looking like a disaster.

I have Skyped twice.....yeah, it was pretty cool.

Then I read an article on "Wired Magazine" about how easy it is for someone to activate your webcam without your knowledge....

I unplugged my web cam and will never plug it in again....hence...no more Skype for me.

Oh bummer.
Did you have to tel me that Kruppa, I talk to all my family on skype and the kids freinds all have access to us. Now who is looking at menoway

A friend and I used to go in a christian forum talk to people of other religons then us .Once a guy kept wanting her to cam or skype with him ,She told the moderator of the room.

He said that there is a software people can download that records what they see on there screen .if you have a cam on or skype they can record it all.

Sounds creepy to me and Im glad he told us that so id be careful and make sure you know the person offline as well as online or known them a long time as a lady above said.

I have a web cam but don't know how to use it. I know when it is on by the power light. I use skype like a phone, I don't have to worry about running out of minutes...

Everybody has so many diff opinions on it....

Not everyone is all that eager to live the site to chat... myself included. I am pretty comfortable using mingles built in chat system. If I get to know someone pretty well then I usually will go offsite for further communication.

Wow And I thought I was the most paranoid person alive!

Skype is awesome. It is a great way to get to know someone as a real person. Not something I would do with just any online shmo but hey if you really are starting to connect it is so superior to phone calls it is a whole new demension.

Skype allows you get to see them just like you would invite them over to set at the kitchen table and have a glass of tea with you. In clear living color. ( YES; it might mean you wouldn't park the computer on the bed or with your personal papers laying out but it is not exactly rocket science to figure out what the "eye" can pick up. (How hard is it to turn it up to the ceiling if you are "indisposed" or cover the eye with a post it? Or sign off the screen you are on before answering. You decide you do not want furthure contact with anyone it is easy to block their access to your number. It is not like you have to turn your cam on or even answer a ring up if you don't want to. And you can leave a pleasant away message.

But if you do; you get all the inflections, gestures, and an honest body language as you would in person. You can set and have a coffee together , share a hobby, see how they interact with pets, share pictures, or actually visit with family/friends that drop by. And yes if you want to, and or they want you to, you can see what their real lifestyle is about. Considerably harder to hide a wife or girlfriend if you are looking right at them when you are connecting.

Even If you actually want to know what you are getting into before you meet in some public place where you could be publiclly humiliated a quiet chat can assuage a lot of fear because it is very difficult to doctor live video. And with lap tops and wifi you don't even have to chat at your home until you are ready. And because in a tenth of a second you can cut someone who is not what they represent themself to be... off at the pockets... I am having a hard time knowing what the hesitation is about. Especially if you use and unlisted number which I would do with anyone I had not checked out first since that does give them your home address.

Definitely better than a dramatic exits or getting cornered in a parking lot with someone you don't want to say good bye to. Or don't want to see your license plate or follow you home.

And even better yet no killer phone bill. I can talk to my Grandkids, son, and other friends for hours and it is FREE! lol

And no as far as I know they don't use any cheezy refer a friend crappy programs so this is not some networking thing where there are tons of people knowing your connections.
