I wish we had more of the progressive and positive messages in todays mainstream,,,, This is part of why I dip more into either older hip-hop or the lesser knowns and underground artists. Like, I dunno if anyone actually clicked the links I posted... (doubts it) but they weren't negative or encouraging anything bad. I don't like when rap and hip-hop just becomes embracing negative stereotypes, shallowness, or boasting and materialism. |

Kinda goin off topic here, but it doesn't really matter to me if the lyrics are negative or positive. As long as the music & vocals sound good. And, I'm not the type to be influenced by lyrics or have them effect my mood in any way.
Most of the rap artists I posted talk about gangbanging, sex, or getting high. Same goes for a lot of rock & metal I listen too. Alice In Chains are one of my all time favorite bands and their material is FAR from positive. Just listening to the lyrics, somehow I knew it was just a matter of time before Layne offed himself. But, on the same note, I can respect people that want their music to send out positive vibes. To each their own. |

It really depends for me... once they get into **** like gay-bashing, it's off the table for me.
I want to be able to sing along or rap with music I listen to and there's just some stuff I won't follow. Yet "Stripped, Raped, and Strangled" by Cannibal Corpse is cool by me. I guess it's the difference between stories, etc. and sending out legitimate messages or being brutal, gruesome, even violent in imagery and being downright hateful. |

I agree. To blatantly discriminate in a hurtful manner in ANY art form. Not just music. Is intolerable.

I don't like rap or hip hop really but I kind of like this catchy song that my friend showed me once. It is in french but you don't really need to understand the lyrics anyway...
