Anyone know good places to stay visit etc.?

The majority of the museums and exhibits are free. The metro is very cool and will get you around town pretty reasonably. Hotels can be expensive. The closer you are to the Capitol, the more you will pay. If you don't mind taking the train or bus then you might find better deals. You will love it.

Set up a tour of the Capitol through your congress person. It's still free, but you'll get a better tour that way.
Go to museums and monuments as well. Figure out the train schedule. It's not hard and you'll have to take it at some point. Go to the Library of Congress. |

I visited the monuments and walked around the pond.
Spring time and the cherry trees were in bloom. That was in 1971. |
