ISPs generally don't care whether you are hosting a server, they only care if you are eating up lots of bandwidth.


That's what I meant when I said it's frowned upon, because of the bandwidth usage.

I think PGP sold out to the government, not sure though.
I dont think its possible for a self generated key to be copied by anyone. They would need access to your key.

I am not a security pro, and have never felt the need to secure my own communications outside of work so my knowledge my be flawed.

If they don't have access to your key, they can infer if using a brute force computation whose difficulty depends on the length of the key. You can make a key that would take millions of years for current computers to crack.
