White House drops veto threat on defense bill

The White House lifted a veto threat against a giant $662 billion defense authorization bill on Wednesday after legislators made changes in language involving detainees.

In particular, the legislators added language to make clear that nothing in the bill requiring military custody of al Qaeda suspects would interfere with the ability of civilian law enforcement to carry out terrorism investigations and interrogations in the United States.

THE ACTUAL LANGUAGE AND PROMOTION OF IT!

Congress can't pass a single bill to create jobs, balance the budget or reduce spending.... but take away our constitutional rights and they push it thru like a hot potatoe!

Agreed, but is it even Congresses duty to create jobs.....Maybe going back to hunting and farming for ourselves remains our only recourse to release government from our lives.

Congress has the power over regulation and law. They set the standards/rules that business must operate under, and are supposed to regulate them for the good of the people. THEY DON'T, or won't, thanks in large part to the large corporate monopolies who have wrested control of our gov't.

No "mom and pops" left... they can't afford the regulations they impose, while big corps can pay $1m fine while making $1B in profits by ignoring them.

The only thing gov't NOW "creates" is debt, and the loss of personal liberty!

And if we quit purchasing...where do their profits come from to pay $1m....we should form communities of self-sufficiency without purchasing hunting and farming only.....

Farming and hunting is also so heavily regulated many aren't "allowed" to even grow gardens anymore.... research it....

RP has a video about their regulation even on "whole milk" and buying direct from farmers.

I Agree. We as a country need to get back to fist principals and follow the constitution AS IT WAS WRITTEN & INTENDED. People should read The Federalist Papers to understand exactly what our founding fathers intended. They were not ambiguous. What is ambiguous about 'Congress shall pass no law......'? Nothing. It is not open to interpretation either. The Constitution is not a living document that needs to be changed with the times, its values are timeless... Those who would like to fundamentally change our country should just move to a country based on socialism. We are a representative republic democracy founded on christan/judeo values. Period. Again, do not take my word for it, read The Federalist Papers.

The House voted 283-136 to pass the 2012 defense authorization bill on Wednesday that contains controversial provisions requiring military detention for some terrorism suspects. The Obama administration, which had threatened to veto the massive $662 billion defense bill over the detainee provisions, announced it would support the bill.

The bill is expected to pass the Senate and head to President Obama's desk this week.

The bill requires military custody for suspects linked to al-Qaida or its affiliates, even if they are captured in the U.S., with an exemption for American citizens and lawful resident aliens. House and Senate leaders made some changes during conference committee to assuage the administration's concerns, adding "assurances" it would not affect existing criminal enforcement and national security waivers of the FBI or any other domestic law enforcement agency. They also gave the president the authority to waive the military-detention provisions.

You need to research a little more.

He "specificly" told congress to "include US citizens, and remove congressional priviledge" from the bill or he would veto it!

What that means to you/me? If we challenge his "authority", by protest or any form, he will have the right to declare ANY US citizen a terrorist and away you go, and NO recourse by congressional act under the constitution or bill of rights...... think FEMA camps.....bye-bye! waving

Even Cheney would envy this power! Wonder what waterboarding supporters would think then, if they were caught under this bill?

By all rights, under this bill, he could imprison congressmen/women, clergy, you, me, internet bloggers, comedians or entertainers (with a following), media.....ANYONE.... BECAUSE IT GIVES HIM EMPIRICAL RULE....like a King!

Think back to the roundup of Japanese Americans during WWII! They were no real threat, but could have been..... all the excuse he will need under this bill!
