I will try to do something nice for a friend or family member
anonymously if possible. This way I know that it goes to someone
I know can really use the help and also someone I care deeply
about.

I also will give to one or another established charity also but I do
check them out and make sure that I agree with how they are spending
the money.

Once I found out that a certain food establishment was throwing out
a large amount of not very perishable items every day. A friend of
mine and I approached them to see if we could instead distribute
their discarded food to one or another food charity. It was a very
frustrating experience. The food charities did not want something
which would have a shorter shelf life and the food supplier did not
want the responsibility of putting out a day old product officially
in the remote chance that someone would claim it made them ill.

So it turned out basically that there was no way to get them to donate
these perfectly good food items to people who really needed them.
For a while we rescued them from the dumpster and handed them out
as a kind of - our responsibility ends when we put them in the
trash kind of thing...but it was an inefficient process.

Yes, I have come to understand the same thing with our local food bank. It is amazing how hard it is to get food that's going in the trash to the people who need it. Food cannot be donated from restaurants. But, most of the grocery stores around here give their excess food supply. And, we have some orchards that donate fruit that will go to waste.

We donate our excess eggs to the local Helping Hands. They've never said anything about food issues.

I live in the Land of The Litigious. Everyone is afraid of being sued for anything. Mainly because they are. frown

Thank you EVERYONE for your giving spirit and unique but basic ideas within the foreground of the forest.(Think I was looking a bit far beyond the trees). Thanks Ruth for the site.. charitynavigator.org !

Found a Habitat Re-Store here in town which is actually kind of charitable for "me". How Embarrassing!

Was able to get rid of a LOT of stuff, and they advised me of what was crap but most was useful. They even had recycling for boxes and such which saved a trip even though I wouldn't have minded.

Donated as well. There are Angels EVERYWHERE!

I would love nothing more than to be able to give. When I had time/money I did. These days, for me, are spent working 4 jobs just to keep my head at water level and not lose my home. Part of me feels guilty because there are so many people less fortunate than me. I consider myself blessed that I have some food in the house <even tho my fridge is mostly bare laugh > and have a warm place to sleep. I do say prayers for those that are cold and hungry every night. I hope my prayers are sufficient at this time in my life flowerforyou .

You have a spirit of gratitude and that is a beautiful thing. I am sure it will be rewarded. flowerforyou

That I do Ruth flowerforyou . Thank you for the nice compliment. By the way...I love your tree

I give when the spirit moves me...sometimes it's cash to a homeless person and sometimes I buy them a meal.

I donate items to causes I believe in and I try to just say 'hi' and treat people kindly.

I do participate in United Way because I've personally known people who benefited from UW services.

Remember that it's not always the person who's "down on their luck" that needs the hand...sometimes it's the single mom who just needs to know that someone cares about what she's doing, or the teacher who's dealt with one too many "parentless" kids. They may look like they've got it all together but you never know how much they are painting nice for the sake of stability or pride.

Also remember that charity during the holidays is the norm...are you paying attention the rest of the year? Needs know no holiday.

Good for all of you who choose to play it forward in whatever way you can.

this is an awesome thread....so many FANTASTIC "new" ideas for me.

I've always liked the idea of adopting a family for the holidays, which includes meal, presents, and such.

Charity is so AWESOME when done right!

Galendgirl is right. Charity should be a year long thing when possible. Our soldiers miss many holidays away from their families and some come home with issues while we enjoyed the security & comforts of family & home during many holidays. I like to give to the local Veteran's Shelter when I can. It might be as simple a thing as picking up some extra toiletries which are always welcome, or going and helping out when the boy scout troop goes there. But they are always grateful.
