she seems to be getting better. I haven.t felt like she is bad enough to call the doctor. She has been fine after i give her gas drops and let her fall asleep on my chest. If things get worse i will call the doc. And thank you everyone for all your advice and knowledge.

Given the time of year and the age of the baby a couple things come to mind.

With cooler weather the furnace comes on and so do more clothes/blankets which loving mothers generally wash and dry with softener sheets. Sometimes even extra ones. Babies are very sensitive to smell. Both can cause annoying allergic reactions in infants. As even a dry nose or headaches or stuffness. Don't you feel like crying when you have these symptoms? Baby's use the power they have to signal you and even clear their airways by crying.

Also at five months crying, as upsetting as it is, is a form of exercise for baby's. Great for lung developement if not taken to extream. If you listen you will decern a different pitch or even rythem to an exercise cry. It isn't as frantic and sometimes even sounds like a crude vocalization.

At five months baby's start catching on to the mother response when they cry. While I know it is hard try not to jump immediately and go to comfort efforts wait and listen. This will help your baby learn to self comfort which some crying actually is.

Always offer water before for food. Babys that are in the crying stage tend to be a little dehydrated from the effort so an ounce or two of water more is not going to starve them.

If you suspect gas or hunger be careful to add only very digestible {rice is usually the most tolerated) cereal in tiny amounts. ONLY one new food at a time per week is a good way to avoid giving your child something thier system may not like.

Last but not least keeping a baby journal is a helpful way to have good information when you are problem solving or talk to a nurse line, doctor, or experienced parent. How much, how long, and when a baby cries can be really helpful information. It also helps if you get a lazy pediatrician that refuses to respond to you if your concerns. If you have documentation of what you have tried it saves a lot of time spinning your wheels.

Good Luck.

Try laying her on her tummy on your legs as you are sitting down and gently move your thighs from side to side. The rocking motion will probably calm her, (it worked when mine were tiny) but of course still see a health professional when you can.

The best thing for helping babies get rid of gas...i swear it works.
Lay her down on her back and put your hands on the bottoms of her feet, let her push against your hands. It really does help her push out those bubbles.

I have never heard of this. I will keep it in mind in case I have grandbabies one day.

I hadn't heard of it but was at a loss to calm my two when they were tiny. I knew rocking would help. And laying on their tummy would. Like a poster above she lay her baby on her chest.
Anyway provided they are not likely to fall and you position them carefully on your thighs with their head to the side so they can breathe they will settle quickly.

Also I purchased a white noise tape from a stationery store. It was strange noises, a bit like a chugging noise. That put on in a cassette player near their cots stopped them crying and settled them within five minutes or so, but the tape lasted 30 minutes so I just left it running.

Hope you enjoy your grandbabies.

she is 5 weeks old now. And starting yesterday she began crying all the time. I don't think it's colic because she finally falls asleep. But she wants to eat all the time and just never really happy when she is awake.

she is having a growth spurt which is why she is always hungry. feed her on demand NOT on a schedule and u will see a great decrease in fussiness & crying - don't forget frequent burping and rock her with tummy down on your knees with u sitting (of course) when u burp her (she might fall asleep!)

she is crying of hunger or lonliness or discomfort - make sure she is fed on demand - diaper is clean & dry and is not lonely, too hot or too cold- if her tummy is full, she is burped & dry & warm - she might respond well to a swing, a ride in the car, or best-hold her in a rocking chair - also invest in a cool mist vaporizer

if u are nursing - the more she eats the more u will produce to catch up to her appetite, if she is bottle fed - stay away from iron added formulas (gas & constipation)

TBH it sounds like colic is possible

good luck!

don't start putting gas drops in her!Whats wrong with u??Breast feed her and she will be just fine.Babies go thru growing spurts, emotional growth and other human things. Don't put anything other than natural boob milk. If ur not breast feeding why not? U have boobs for a reason, use them.Have women forgot how to nurture babies??

Wow, really?? I couldn't breastfeed my children, because I couldn't produce the milk. No every woman can, you know. How rude, and maybe she does.

I am pleased she is well now. It is hard with young babies, and believe me even when their are in their twenties, (as in my case) it is just as hard!!!
