I don't want to be happy.... there is no 'want' involved...I am content...because I created the mindspace to be so...there is no striving, no attachment to material wants.. It's a state of mind...nothing more...to 'want' something is to decide that something is already lacking in you or your world...it becomes a sense of less, with that kind of mindset. I can remember a story shared a few years ago... An old monk sat in his garden enjoying the warm rays of the spring sunlight, when some of the town's most successful and erudite people came to see him... They asked, "Oh Father, please show us what this enlightenment is, and how to attain it". He quietly raised his arm and pointed down to the creek, where the Village Idiot was merrily playing in the shallows. The Towns folk reared back in indignation, and said, "Surely you mock us!" Again, he quietly raised his hand and pointed, and again a few of the Town's folk voiced their contempt. A third time he raised his hand and pointed, and a young man, who had wandered over to see what all the fuss was about, said, " Ahh father, you are so correct!...see how content and joyful he is, in everything he does!...he wants for nothing and enjoys the moment he is in!" Happiness is for the Enlightened Village idiot. That's because ignorance is bliss. If I, being of sound mind, could chose between ignorant bliss and knowledge with discontent I would not chose ignorant bliss. But if you look at the world and you have no passion or preferences for anything and you don't decide or chose what you want or don't want anything then you will create and attract things into your life by default and not on purpose. You said, ".to 'want' something is to decide that something is already lacking in you or your world...it becomes a sense of less, with that kind of mindset." I disagree. To want something and to intend to have it is your power to direct your attention to the things you want and bring them into your experience. It is your conscious will to create your life on purpose. The thing that creates lack is attention to the thing you do not have and attention to the state of not having it. Once you decide and know what you want with the intention that you have it, then it will manifest into your experience. Or you could just chose to take whatever comes and be ignorantly blissful, but that does not appeal to me. I don't think she is saying ignorance is bliss. What I believe she is saying is that those that keep looking for bigger and better things have to be dissatisfied with what they have. If you are content with what you have now, there is no need to look to improve anything. I used to be ambitious and never settle for less. But I found in the process, I was never happy with what I had either. Always needed to upgrade or improve or catch up to the neighbor. Once I decided that I had more than I dreamed I would as a teenager I was able to relax and be content and happy with what I had. Problem was, the ex wasn't... But I was never really happy with anything in my life until I told myself that what I had was good enough. You sound like you are talking about strictly material things. Keeping up with the Jones etc. I am talking about wanting more of everything. More life, more energy, more love, more of the good things that life has to offer. Wallace D. Wattles says: WHATEVER may be said in praise of poverty, the fact remains that it is not possible to live a really complete or successful life unless one is rich. No man can rise to his greatest possible height in talent or soul development unless he has plenty of money; for to unfold the soul and to develop talent he must have many things to use, and he cannot have these things unless he has money to buy them with. A man develops in mind, soul, and body by making use of things, and society is so organized that man must have money in order to become the possessor of things; therefore, the basis of all advancement for man must be the science of getting rich. The object of all life is development; and everything that lives has an inalienable right to all the development it is capable of attaining. Man’s right to life means his right to have the free and unrestricted use of all the things which may be necessary to his fullest mental, spiritual, and physical unfoldment; or, in other words, his right to be rich. ******ALSO YOU must get rid of the last vestige of the old idea that there is a Deity whose will it is that you should be poor, or whose purposes may be served by keeping you in poverty. The Intelligent Substance which is All, and in All, and which lives in All and lives in you, is a consciously Living Substance. Being a consciously living substance, It must have the nature and inherent desire of every living intelligence for increase of life. Every living thing must continually seek for the enlargement of its life, because life, in the mere act of living, must increase itself. A seed, dropped into the ground, springs into activity, and in the act of living produces a hundred more seeds; life, by living, multiplies itself. It is forever Becoming More; it must do so, if it continues to be at all. Intelligence is under this same necessity for continuous increase. Every thought we think makes it necessary for us to think another thought; consciousness is continually expanding. Every fact we learn leads us to the learning of another fact; knowledge is continually increasing. Every talent we cultivate brings to the mind the desire to cultivate another talent; we are subject to the urge of life, seeking expression, which ever drives us on to know more, to do more, and to be more. In order to know more, do more, and be more we must have more; we must have things to use, for we learn, and do, and become, only by using things. We must get rich, so that we can live more. The desire for riches is simply the capacity for larger life seeking fulfillment; every desire is the effort of an unexpressed possibility to come into action. It is power seeking to manifest which causes desire. That which makes you want more money is the same as that which makes the plant grow; it is Life, seeking fuller expression. The One Living Substance must be subject to this inherent law of all life; it is permeated with the desire to live more; that is why it is under the necessity of creating things. The One Substance desires to live more in you; hence it wants you to have all the things you can use. |

Don't even get me started on love, energy and life! I have been bankrupt in those areas for a long time now! Especially love (with one short exception). But if I focus on my lack of those in my life, it is just flat depressing. So, I thank God for what I do have and keep my chin up each day, or at least try to. Some days are harder than others... |

Don't think about what you lack, think about what you want. Believe you have them, (the Bible even says this)expect them, and accept them and allow them to come into your experience. |

This is the way to focus on what you want, rather than on what you lack. (Some people feel that these are the same thing.)
To focus on what you want, decide to have it. Intend to have it. Picture having. Pretend that it is yours already. See yourself having it. Visualize yourself getting and having it. Believe it is yours already... etc. To focus on what you lack: Worry about not having it, see yourself lacking it, believe you can't have it, believe you can't afford it...etc. It is the same thing or object, but it is how you think about it that matters. Ask and you will receive! But ask the right way by knowing that it is already yours. These truths are written the the BIBLE. |

I'd rather focus on actually obtaining that which I desire, breaking it down step by step, focusing on the big picture, etc. |

Happy is an emotion that comes and goes as do all emotions. It feels good so we strive to obtain those things that make us feel happiness. However, in this life, there is nothing that remains the same or stays with us forever so, happiness is fleeting. Unless you base your happiness on something eternal. And, there is only thing I can think of that is eternal.

I'd rather focus on actually obtaining that which I desire, breaking it down step by step, focusing on the big picture, etc. The pretending part is difficult I agree. But you don't have to pretend that it is yours but just BELIEVE it is yours already. It has just not come into your experience yet, and probably because you are focused on the LACK of it and not focused on the HAVING OF IT. So pretending is part of the mental exercise. There is the story of how a man became a big time Movie producer in Hollywood. He squatted on an abandoned tailor on the movie set and pretended to be a big time movie producer. He told others he was, and they believed him, and he acted the part. Eventually someone gave him the money to produce a film and eventually he did become a big time movie producer. Believe that you are. Believe that you have it already. Feel it with excitement and emotion and the universe (GOD) will deliver it to you. Ask and it will be given. Have faith. It is your INTENTION to have or be what you want that will mold the future wave. When you Intend to do something that means that failure is just not an option. You intend it. |

In order to know more, do more, and be more we must have more; we must have things to use, for we learn, and do, and become, only by using things. We must get rich, so that we can live more.
I totally disagree with this statement. The only thing required to learn is observation, which doesn't cost a penny! And no reward is necessary for learning to occur. This has been proven in countless experiments with both animals and humans. Thus, money cannot buy you knowledge, nor happiness. Happiness can be obtained through learning, but learning is done all the time, whether we make a conscious effort to do so or just observe stimuli in our environment. Therefore, the statement that "we must get rich, so that we can live more" is ridiculous. We live more by learning more, and we learn more just by being alive each day...new experiences teach us new things. It's pretty cool actually! |

We live more by learning more, and we learn more just by being alive each day...new experiences teach us new things. It's pretty cool actually! I spend a lot of money on books from Amazon.com and I spend a hundred dollars a month for my high speed Internet connection and I spent about $600.00 for my computer and printer etc. I read to learn things. I go to school to learn things. Those things cost money. I have bookshelves full of books. They were not free. If I had more money I could travel the world, live more and do more. I could buy the best health care, beauty care etc. Money represents energy because when you work for someone and spend your energy doing something it is worth something. Your are paid for your efforts. If I had more money I could help people who need it, give to my loved ones things they desire, and many good things. I did not say that "money" buys happiness. Happiness comes from within and comes from living a full life. Yes you can live a full life with less money and less energy but you can live a fuller live with more money and more energy. Money is not a bad thing. Abundance is living life to the fullest, being happy, healthy and wealthy and having not only what you need but what you desire. |
