All our California Coast had tsunami warnings and a couple of schools were closed. It was just very choppy water, and it hit during low tide, there were some boats though that did get washed away and slammed into some harbor bridges....sucks for the owners of those ones. The water was crazy green and dirty. I fear for my little coastal marine lifers----They dont survive well under these conditions, they tend to stress out. My poor lil Octopi...tears

Just saw on Yahoo that the radiation levels outside of the nuclear plant are surging. I really hope they can contain that situation.

*edit*
Actually, it sounds like the levels inside the plant are surging:
"Japanese nuclear officials say radiation levels inside a nuclear power plant have surged to 1,000 times their normal levels after the cooling system failed."

Just wanted to let everyone know that even though I am not far from Tokyo we have not suffered much damage here, power and water is on and life is returning to normal. I think the fact that there is relatively small damage compared to the magnitude of the earthquake is a testament to Japanese engineering that has gone into earthquake proofing the major populated areas. Also Tokyo Bay seems to have provided natural shelter for the same area from the Tsunami.

I happened to catch a bit of Fox's coverage of the events. I pray for everyone in America who has been affected by that sensationalized garbage. I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers. Please consider a more reliable source for your news.

Please, before you respond to this, stop to fully consider how much worse things could have been.

never mind, reading further I see various reports on the 'shift' with different approximations and it seems this is not something so extraordinary(the shift)

I should know better having been at the epicenter of one of these SENSATIONALISTIC media blitzes myself,,,,,,glad you are ok

This has been a pretty eventful year already, geologically. First the volcanic activity in the Phillipenes and Hawaii and now this. Also didn't the New Madrid fault act up a little bit too? I suspect we haven't seen the last of this ongoing geologic change.

One of the things about tectonic movement is the release of stress in one location (like the earthquake in Japan) causes the buildup of stress nearby. This earthquake make cause another 100 miles away soon. It could also release enough stress to prevent the area from having another for a long time. It depends on how the plates are locked together.

Let's hope New Madrid doesn't have a "big one". It could be as bad as Japan's.

I feel for all the people who have been hurt.
