Sleazy operators pass themselves off as statesmen, as thinkers of deep gravitas, and the crowds, unable to distinguish sanctimony from sincerity, bravado from ********, lap it up. Let’s be clear. It was the Republicans who wrecked the economy. Both their people and their policies drove the economy into the ditch. They wrecked the economy not once, but twice in the last eighty years. So Republicans condescending to instruct Americans about how to fix the economy is like the captain of the Titanic lecturing shipping operators about safe procedures for navigating the north Atlantic. No sane society would tolerate it. But this one does. How bad is it this time? Six million people have lost their jobs. Twenty five million are underemployed. Many will never work again. Eight trillion dollars of middle class wealth has been destroyed in the housing collapse. One out of four mortgage holders are under water, owing more on their home than it’s worth. Fifty million people are living in poverty. One out of eight Americans are on food stamps. One of every two children will be on food stamps at some point in their lives. How much worse can it get? And the rich? Corporate profits are at an all-time high. But corporate taxes — not the imaginary “nominal” rates they whine so bitterly about, but the taxes actually paid — are among the lowest in the industrial world. Income inequality is at its highest level since 1917. Between 2000 and 2006, two thirds of all the growth in the entire economy went to the top 1%. And the “too big to fail” banks, those that wrecked the economy and extorted trillions of dollars from the government to rescue them? They are now even bigger. How much better can it get? And the Republicans’ response? The working and middle class need to pay. They need to give up the union protections that have afforded them the slightest bargaining power against the largest organizations on earth. They need to give up the mortgage interest deductions that allowed them to buy and own their own homes. They need to give up government help with college loans that allowed their children to get the education they could never have. They need to give up any expectation of extended unemployment insurance, even though there are five people looking for every job available. I think whats happening with the assualt on Unions is a good thing.
They are not getting by with this and the country can see the only ones stopping this from passing right now are the Brave Democrats who have left the state. It was leave or sell out your disticts becaus they had no power to stop it with out leaving. This will champion the biggest backlash against Repuplicans in maybe decades. They have really screwd up this time. They have ignited the evil sleeping Twin of The Teabaggers. They are showing thier ***** in a way noboy else could ever of done it wrote about it Jumped on Opral or Dr Phil.. no none of this has the American public seem more hypocracy that this. Interesting. The debt is pretty easy to misrepresent, depending on your verbage. No question. A trillion is a huge number, but compared to what? That's like saying, "300 pounds. That's huge"! Huge for a newborn baby, but pretty teensy for a grown hippopotamus. The numbers are only meaningful in the context of more meaningful measures. That's why economists view the debt as a % of GDP. GDP would tell us how much debt we are able to carry.
In my mind, GDP is analogous to "volume" for a business. A business with huge volume can afford to carry a lot of debt (like a grocery store chain, even though profit margins are quite low). A small business, like maybe your local shoe repair shop, does very low volume and can afford to carry very little debt. It is true that debt as a % of GDP is on an upward trend. The macro curve is virtually a straight line from 1910 on. At what point does it become unsustainable? I don't know and neither do any of you. But I have a hunch. Over 30% of Conservatives believe that President Obama is the Anti-Christ....that tells you how ignorant they are.....or brainwashed. People with real education end up non-political or libertarian, usually. Schooling is distinct from education. You don't have to actually learn anything to be schooled-you only have to pass exams and do assignments. There are plenty of know-it-all, pretentious, ignorant ivy league-ers in both major parties. Hell, even G.W. Bush had more "education" than any previous democratic or republican president, and look what a disaster he was.

Assuming there is no intervention in the economy, the poor child is just as likely to become wealthy as anyone else. Andrew Carnegie started out poor as dirt and became wealthy through his industriousness and the fact that during his lifetime, the government was not the monstrosity that it is today. Even my father grew up on a farm in an extremely backwoods (not at all wealthy-he shared a quite tiny house with 4 sisters, too) part of northern Kentucky and put himself through college and got a good job. The vast majority of limitations are self-imposed. |
