why do you feel that hunting is not a sport?
Hunting is as much a sport as NASCAR, I guess... but then again, I'm not really into sports or anything, so... |

a sport is an organized, competitive, entertaining, and skillful activity requiring commitment, strategy, and fair play, in which a winner can be defined by objective means. physical events such as scoring goals or crossing a line first often define the result of a sport. in short, sport is a by-product of competition. now i'm no expert, but it seems to me that the hunted you describe, have no idea they are involved in a contest therefore, i have to ask; where is the "sport" in that? i can't help but wonder, just how many of you would still hunt deer if they too had guns. now that would make it, (how did you put it?) "a fair sport for them and us." what does that have to do with anything? if i go the grocery store and buy a steak, i don't hide behind the false pretence that i am doing it for sport. it has nothing to do with it. and if you want to put words in my mouth at least make them true. at no time did i say i am better than anyone (hunter or not) what i said is that hunting is not a sport. in case you missed that here it is again, hunting is not a sport. how did you arrive at your assumption that this statement means i am better than any hunter? personally i don't care if people hunt, what i don't agree with is the fact that they (hunters) feel the need to defend their activities by insisting they are taking part in a sporting event. when lions take down prey i have never heard of it referred to as a sport. great whites are not out seeking sport when they feed, are they? what makes you so different? nice condescending ending...it kind of proves that you do care. it takes great skill to perform neurosurgery and to figure complex algorithms too, but i have yet to hear these referred to as sports. how much skill is there in placing feeders and spreading urine around then climbing up a tree and simply waiting for your unsuspecting "goal" to be artificially drawn near enough to you that you can fire a high powered rifle at it? like i said earlier, if the deer had guns and the patients and skill required to use them, i bet there would be very few of you that would still participate in this "sport". |

ok this is for anyone to answer,,,, why do you feel that hunting is not a sport? I have heard this stated before. and I still dont understand why people say this. I for one eat most everything that I hunt or trap, with the exception of skunks, and bobcats and coyotes . now in order for me to pursue these animals I do a lot of miles a day walking in all kinds of weather. and this includes packing out what I end up with. lol yep go ahead and hit a deer at 70 miles an hour and see what ya got left to drive. as for the bunny troubles ,invest in some garden fence thats made to keep em out. sorry not from the south, live right in the middle of everything. I know of no where in the lower fourty eight that it is legal to spotlight. oh I see the op is from England, very interesting. i could see where it is a sport if people didn't use traps or blinds, or sit in a tower getting high and drunk all day waiting for a deer to come along just to blow it out of existence, but if people were to use a bow and arrow or a knife and track the things, then i could see it as a recreational sport... |

Depends on your dictionary.
an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature
The part about often requiring competition seems to indicate that competition is only often required vs always required . . . but that is just one dictionary of many . . . I think its a fairly pointless argument if your only point is a definition says so . . . Hunting IS a sport in every way mentioned in every definition depending on if you have hunting buddies and are trying to out compete them . . . so in what way is that any different then any other physical activity. The reality of the situation is that the word sport is completely arbitrary and based only on human entertainment as it meets some way to have fun as it meets the possibility of competition. Hardly a rigorous objectivity defined scientific principle. So funny when people argue over a definition of a subjective human activity that is based solely on the pleasure of the individual. I mean ultimately we could make a sport out of flicking buggers, does that make it entertaining to everyone, or require skill? Well what if you where a one armed one fingered man with no legs for leverage, well dam that's a tough sport all of a sudden . . . . This thread made my day guys really did. BTW I am a hunting guide here in North Carolina (its my side job I work as an application engineer for my 9-5). My purpose is for land management, so I check with rangers surveys and cull reports, honestly most times its boar, occasionally black bear (all of the serious hunters who do not need guides dear hunt and so that is usually managed quite well). They (Boars) are just so overpopulated and cause damaged flora and so need to be managed to allow certain types of birds who only nest in low bushes to be able to migrate through the areas successfully, and mate in the spring ect. I just enjoy being in the forests and game reserves so much that when I see animal damage, or over balance of the ecosystem I then put adds on Craigslist to guide people on hunts to assist where I can. Otherwise I just enjoy nature. My requirements are that the person or persons take the entire carcass (abiding by state laws), have valid hunting license, make a best effort to kill the beast in a single well placed shot. I also due to back injuries require the hunter to get the carcass back to camp, im happy to help skin and clean and separate the kill. I also do not charge anything if you never get to line up a shot which is a positive for most people who hire guides, I also charge less then half as much than most guides, but I also do not make arrangements to haul the carcass, most see that as a deal breaker. Oh well I do this for the land not the entertainment so . . . So for me, its not a sport, its serious business this taking care of the land thing. That does not change the fact that many of my clients DO engage in this becuase they get to boast to there friends and compete for that mega buck/boar/bear each year. IMHO that makes it a sport for them. |

an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature
I think this definition could potentially give serial killers merit as athletes,,lol funny though, not funny hahah, but funny interesting the things we value where hunting a defenseless animal for SPORT is one acceptable form of entertainment, but letting dogs FIGHT(as they would in the wild) is an unpardonable sin,,, |

Ya know there are a gazillion profiles of men with dead animals...ya hide in the brush, spray the female scent on ya and shoot.
I think for a kill to be picture worthy a guy should have to jump on the animal with a butter knife, wrestle it down and stab it to death. Then maybe, just maybe it's worth posting..barely! |

HOWEVER as despicable as it is to force dogs to fight, it is indeed a sport. Sport just like beauty its in the eye of the beholder, subjective and often capricious. I no longer hunt, I do guide hunters when its necessary for land management purposes (I have only once since guiding needed to take a shot to humanely kill the animal). I find most people are just ignorant of what it takes to balance nature, being an influence that allows varied species to survive and thrive. If 500 wild dogs lived near your house you would need kill the ones that invaded your land threatening your tame animals. The animals will eat anything they can, flora that may be niche for various populations of other animals. In NC 1500 wild boars where culled in a 15 county area and still we have an outbreak that is destroying a significant amount of shrub brush. The same shrug brush that is used by many different species of birds. Major universities have studied the environmental issues and we lease federal lands for hunting so we can attempt to balance nature in a way that allows the most varied and healthy mixture of wildlife to populate our American wilderness. I think its often overlooked the roll hunters play in the bigger picture. |

Unless you're about to starve to death it's trying to kill you, I see no excuse for it. I certainly don't think it's a sport. |

I don't like to watch people hunt, that's boring, but watching animals hunt, that's exciting. You want to see some brutality? Watch nature. I gotta get rid of PBS, no wonder my cat is so violent. |

I like the smell of a woodsy outdoorsman. Very romantic. Deer meat is good...as long as it is sausage.
I wonder if it was because I grew up in a sleeping bag that smelled of smoke? |

Hunting is actually a survival skill. it is not any more a sport than a fact of our survival if we want to eat outside of the big city. If you can eat meat but can't kill to do it you are a sissy! It is the Chimp who gets the meat that also gets all the girl chimps!
Besides, I normally wouldn't date a vegetarian anyways. If I can't have my Burger life is not worth living! Besides, Hunting is more of a skill. Just becasue you can point with a gun does not mean you can hit what you are shooting at! |

Ok there is a lot of controvery seeing hunting as a sport n im sure its one that most ppl are passionate about it. We all have views n opinions differing to others and thats what makes us individuals.
The definition of sport an organized, competitive, entertaining, and skillful activity requiring commitment, strategy, and fair play, in which a winner can be defined by objective means. But alot of the sports we do see can reasonably not be considered a sport. Take for example card games and board games. Do u consider them to be a sport?. Well there are a sport because they are classified as "mind sports" and some are recognized as Olympic sports, requiring primarily mental skills and mental physical involvement. They have a set of rules which are used to determine how the game is played. Hunting is a sport now because one must employ strategy, have a certain level of fitness, have a proficiency and training in various kinds of weaponry and be able to strike down ones opponent when the opportunity presents itself. And many other sports contain these same dimensions the only difference is the opponent is an animal with hunting as opposed to another human for example as in boxing n karate. Do u consider men beating the crap out of each other in a boxing ring as a sport? Some sports are cruel and barbaric, some contain no skill at all, some are players playing off against each other, some are even based on the technical skill such as diving to determine a winner Some are more individual to urself. Although it may be incredibly hard to see it as a sport it is classified as one none the less. I guess this is where we all need to be individual to decide what we consider a sport is n what is not but even more so then that respect other ppls choices and beliefs even if we feel differently about them. |
