So have you taken a fresh look at your profile during this discussion. I did but I didn't change anything. I might add to it though...

I took out "Anything you want to know, you'll have to ask."

Good for you! That line has gotten old too!

I am glad you responded because I wanted to post something about how some people fall back onto using cliches not only because they make it easy to create a profile (bad maybe but better than 'I don't know what to say, or my very fav, no response in almost every category) but also because not everyone is a writer, words - written words do not come easily to many people. Some of those many, many profiles have to have been written by very sincere, funny, bright people who have big talents elsewhere...just not in the medium of the written word. So they are at a disadvantage but are out there trying none the less.

The profiles and posts that really get to me are the ones written by English speaking Americans that are so badly written that it is a struggle to even fathom the meaning of them. Gawd, really don't they know what those red squiggly lines that appear under words even mean???

I was kidding, of course. I wouldn't be caught dead (or married, essentially the same thing) with that sort of banality in my profile!

And I agree with your point that not everybody is a writer -- nor should they be expected to be. However, I do think a minimal amount of literacy is of significant utility when trying to communicate in this sort of written medium.

But I'm not looking for profiles that sound like they were written by John Updike, particularly since he's dead. I'm just looking for profiles that actually have something to say, and sufficient communications skills to say it clearly.

I don't see many of those.

LOL, I have read your profile and knew it to be cliche free!!!

I guess I am spared all this cliche business because I don't pay attention to the dating part of this site. I do occasionally look at a profile of someone who has 'viewed' me but that's about it.

So if dead and married are one in the same to you, why are you reading so many profiles (excuse the assumption here, I think it a fair one since you are so familiar with the profusion of cliches) What is it you hope to find here relationship wise? Obviously not marriage since you have books yet to write and movie scrips to manage.

One more thing if I may? You know what you need from a profile, isn't that a great thing? How easy it is for you to just say "no" because you know you need to see a certain ability to use our language to at least minimal specific standards. Perhaps cliches should be your friends!! LOL, thanks for a great thread!! I am sure it got a lot of people thinking!

Don't take any wooden nickels

A bird in hand is worth two in the bush

If your friends jumped off a bridge would you

...The first time i saw that bird commercial, you don't even want to know what i think every time i hear that saying...

Quick definitions from Macmillan (c o c k)

noun
▸see rooster more...
▸an adult male bird of any kind

  rofl
I was right all along..

Wait a second....two in the bush? Really? Do people do this?

Yeah, I think of cliches as literary STDs.

Makes sense. I mean, if you're not really looking for anybody, then it's less crucial what's in someone's profile.

Well, ideally I would like to find someone compatible for something long-term. Then again, long-term and I don't seem to mesh well (although I'm perfectly willing to be proven wrong) so maybe I should just try to start out with someone I find interesting enough to pursue more than a 12-word discussion.

Actually, when I signed up here back in 2006, I expected I would have had 4 or 5 exes from here by now....reality brings a rude awakening....!

It really IS a great thing, because I have a quick litmus test I can implement now. "Tired of dating loosers...." Nope, thanks for playing, here are some lovely parting gifts and the home version for you.

Well, there's a difference between "grumpy" and "discerning," but that really doesn't apply to my pants so I'll just stop now....!
