if it's someone i know or care about...i'm okay with it. otherwise, i don't want to be called cute endearments. i don't do cute. i live in the south, so it happens a lot...and i suck it up, generally, rather than offend people. i shrug off that i'm bothered, even though i'm saying inside, "i'm not your freaking sweetie." |

I like these words. I use them often for my family and for my friends. I was told by someone to not use it freely as it could offend others. I know the word 'love' is tagged on to people's names and shared between friends. Is it a regional thing? the term Big Daddy has so much more meaning to it |

I use the following..... WHORE- For when chicks get so piss drunk they are puking and I stand over them and shout, "That's what you deserve! You whore!". It's more for a pep talk ya know. HOOKER- Call myself that all the time. BIATCH- Reserved for Mom. HONEY- For the stripper who loves me long time. HUN- RKISIT NUTSAC- Term of endearment for people who are acting a fool. Ok. That's enough for now. okay...he can be your "hun". ...but he's my "lori-sweetcheeks"!!! |

Southern thing. Though I only call my friends hun, not the general stranger. Darling gets used only with HEAVY with sarcasm. Because then it's not an endearment, but because they're being an a*s!

no.
I'm a rude northerner and yes we are often taught that personal terms of endearment are reserved for people we know or those we warm up to quickly where it is NOT inappropriate - for example - I am not going to call a young male student honey because it could be too easily misinterpreted. But the young guy whose my neighbor - outside of the professional setting, sure. And we aren't rude. We simply say what we mean, tell it like it is, get to the point, don't mince words In fact we really are friendlier because our communication style is honest & direct - sometimes interpreted as rude by southerners and midwesterners who you can talk to all day long - then walk away and wonder what - if anything - was just said but I think that easterners are by far the friendliest outside of the gurus from cali *runs away & ducks* |

I have heard those terms all my life. Do they bother me at times sure they do when they come from those I do not know. But then at times I just shake my head and smile. Does it totally offend me no.
I do not use the terms myself with those that I do not know. But yeah at times I will use the ones such as sweetie, sweet thang, hun or babe with those that I'm intimate with. Otherwise I kind of like the sound of my name.... I do have friends and family that use different terms and don't find it a problem. Just the way it is I know they don't mean to offend anyone it is a southern thang for sure.... ya learn to accept it. |

Terms of endearment from strangers seem very fake to me. Not a good way to start off getting to know someone.

They tell us not to call people that at work because it's demeaning to our patients. I don't get it myself, and have never heard a patient complain about it.

i think if you are a waitress or bartender, than you're fine. Other than that, it's kinda awkward. although there are some people that it just sounds natural from. It's just your personality you shouldnt have to change it for anyone.

personally i think a stranger calling me schnookums, sugarbooger or sweetcheeks is worst Sugarbooger? you been watching Jimmy neutron again? |

It really depends on who is saying it and how it comes across. I don't like being called cutie or cutie pie. It's way worse when its a creepy old guy who is drunk.
I don't have a problem with hun, honey from your average stranger, if it comes across as like someone saying miss, ms, ma'am. |

Hehehehe. You gals would HATE me! I only use actual names of females when they are lovers. Other than that, it is "babydoll, fun bunz, skank, honey".
At my age, I doubt I will change my pattern any time soon. Personally, I think the like/dislike of the pet names thing stems from personal attraction. If someone is physically repellant..."honey" aint gonna help. If you think that person is hot, you aint gonna have any problem with anything they choose to call you. |
