[I know what Onan's sin was, the question is, how did he accomplish that sin? To the writer of the Onan story, the "how" was not important. It was the "why" and the result that mattered. Focusing on one tiny detail of one scene of one chapter of a much larger story causes on to miss the forest for the trees, and it also causes one to read into the story something that isn't there. I think that if god had not intended us to masturbate then he'd have made our arms much shorter. If we affirm the consequent (thats allowed, right? ), then people born with short arms were meant by god to not masturbate. That's just mean.
What do you think of this issue?
Sin is that which interferes with the deepest positive experiences a person is potentially capable of; many of our pursuits of more superficial forms of positive experience do, in the end, interfere with our access to these deeper positive experiences, whether we realize it or not. I'm not justifying behavioral rules, unforgiving self criticism, judgementalism, etc - since guilt, denial, and arbitrary regiments also interfere with our deepest positive experiences. Will you burn in hell No. for having sex with someone you love? (yourself).
For some people, masturbating may help them to cultivate self acceptance, affection, an attitude of caring and compassion for themselves. This is the opposite of sin. For others, depending what they do with their mind and their heart, it might encourage them to lust, to objectify the opposite sex, to prioritize base concerns and agendas.. and for others....well there may be as many experiences and consequences (positive and negative) as there are people. Do any of you do it even though you know HE'S watching? Have you stopped beating your dog? I mean: Is he watching? Kinky. |
