MADRID – A 10-year-old girl has given birth in southern Spain and authorities are evaluating whether to let her and her family retain custody of the baby, an official said Tuesday. The baby was born last week in the city of Jerez de la Frontera, said Micaela Navarro, the Andalusia region's social affairs minister.

Navarro told reporters the father of the baby is also a minor, and both the mother and the baby were in good health. Her department declined to give details, including the sex of the baby, but said authorities do not consider this a case of rape and that no criminal investigation is under way.

Under Spanish law, having consensual sex with someone under age 13 is classified as child abuse, an official with the Spanish Justice Ministry in Madrid said. But this particular case is complicated by the fact that the father of the baby is also a minor and it is not clear if he could be charged, the official said.

Spanish newspapers said the mother is of Romanian origin.

The daily Diario de Jerez reported the girl was already pregnant when she arrived in Spain, but did not say when she came to this country. It is not clear if the father is in Spain.

Medical experts warn that because young girls are still growing, they are at higher risk during pregnancy. Studies have shown that teenage girls are more likely to give birth to premature babies and their infants have a higher chance of dying by age one.

What is hypocritical is American laws more than anything. Now anyone correct me if I am wrong but the last I heard the age of consent was 12 years old in Canada (British Columbia). But just becasue it is legal for 12 year old girls to get some there if an American goes there and some 12 year old girl hits on him (BEAR IN MIND THE WHOLE CONSENT THING) and he does giver her what she wants but authorities here find out he still gets to go to jail for Statutory Rape even though he was in Canada when it happened.
Now since Culture was brought up a little lesson on Romanians. In many parts of Europe other than Romania they are known a Roma or Pikeys in Brittan. They ARE gypsies. Real 100% Gypsies. They are considered a serious problem in that they are indeed prone to criminal activity. I am not generalizing Romanians. Roma are wanderers. Even many Liberal Europeans look down on Roma as scum. France just chased a whole bunch of them away recently in their struggle with illegal immigration. Where Roma go the crime rate rises. When they are driven out it falls. Not all Roma are criminals but a large percentage resort to criminal activity to support themselves. The criminal activities range from robbery and theft to prostitution and drug dealing.
Now for the whole "child bride" thing, in many cultures today where children would be married when they were 12 now they still have arranged marriages in many countries like China and Japan. The arrangements are made as early as 5 years old. The Mormon church marries girls off by the time they are 16 here in the good old USA. For a girl of ten to get pregnant is dangerous for the girl especially since the pregnancy can kill her. Also the next question is what does the mother do for a living. If mommy is a whore the daughter could very well be learning from example.

Like I say, If a married man has to get a prostitute there is a problem in his relationship and it necessarily is not him. Women use sex like a weapon too. And in a marriage if she cuts her husband off and expects fidelity she is sadly fooling herself. Dog will hunt when hungry!

the youngest ever was 6. it is not even very uncommon for 10 yo girls to have babies...that's biology for you. you would think that societally there would be much fewer....
