Personally I feel if an openly gay man wants to serve he should. The problem is too many "Manly men" running things. Worst is what would they do if a Gay man manged to do something SO heroic he earned a CMOH (Congressional Medal Of Honor, the HIGHEST award possible in the Military!!! Most who received it were dead when it was awarded to them,) and lived to receive it?

Oh My GOD! A GAY MAN BEING A HERO LET'S ALL FREAK OUT!

Not...

the thing is that gay men would have to act with a lot of decorum and professionalism becasue they would still have to get along with the others. And imagine if a squad of men were acting all Nelly on the parade grounds? Any proper DI would have their heads on poles! Either that or scrubbing toilets with their own tooth brushes for 18 hours a day for a week!

Classical Spartan soldiers were for the most part homosexual. Women were for breeding. They believed the men would fight harder if they had to fight for the ones they loved. Relationships among the soldiers was encouraged. That is something a lot of history books just gloss over very briefly. Now in their day there were Hoplites who were very well respected soldiers in their time and then there were the Spartans. They were the Delta Force of their day. They were literally bred for war. They lived it and breathed it. Equally armed if our modern day soldiers had to face them it would be a blood bath. Even if we sent our best at them they all were bred and cultured for generations to be the best.

I really cannot see why the military cannot tolerance among its own ranks.

and as a nation, they fell...

i don't think anyone cares if men or women love each other, that's a natural thing...it's the gay sex in the barracks that is not natural.
your right, men loving men or women loving women has always been around, and there is really nothing wrong with that.

Sparta fell to politics. They were not conquered. What happened to them was Tradition also got in their way. The could not adapt socially and fell behind. They still were premier warriors LONG into Greece's History. on top of that even the US Marines revere their discipline.

And Boredinaz is right. The Roman were flaming and they had an empire that lasted how long?

I think you miss the point. On base they have to be professional. Same when they are on duty. Buck piles in the barracks should NEVER be tolerated! What they do in the privacy of Hotel rooms and whatever though is their business. Sexual conduct on Base is usually VERY frowned upon.

i'm not sure they were actually gay, but they did things that would seem gay by our standards... the naked wrestling really seems gay, but they had different standards then we do now. to me, it's only gay if they have the sex...

As long as a soldier is capable and willing to carry out their duties on a battlefield, then they can go smoke each others poles in their off time.
