Atheist female here. =)

I'm a girl and I'm an atheist... I think women are a little more hesitant to be that bold in declaring this. I have nothing to substantiate my theory but just an instinct. Being an atheist in this society is a rough road to ride... so is being a woman... Or maybe men are just braver?

Or maybe women are just more indoctrinated to defer to what men want, and today's religions are largely patriarchal.

I guess I see female atheists/agnostics as being strong, dangerous women who refuse to be defer to that which benefits their well-being the least.

Very much atheist, serious one. And I have boobs and brain.
I do look at people who say something about gawd as if they just said something that's most stupid thing in the world.
They should read more than just one book of legends and take the friggin religious tones from public life, starting with the money.

AGNOSTIC: A person too lazy to take a stand on any belief and doesn't bother to decide.

I don't deny it. I don't watch the news either. Is it gonna rain tomorrow? I don't give a ****, I'm still here, might as well enjoy it.

I hardly see how you can define me without knowing me. I've given my agnosticism a HUGE amount of thought over the years, especially after I coded in an ambulance 7 years ago. You'd be amazed at what such an experience does and _doesn't_ do to someone who doesn't subscribe to any particular religion.

It seems we are two very different Agnostics, I really don't give it that much thought, never have. I was raised in a strict catholic background and it has always felt wrong for me to believe in an all knowing being.

If there was a CHURCH of PICARD, I might believe in that. Saint Data...Reverend Mother Troi, Worf the Arch Angel defend us in Battle, be with us against the wicked snares of the Borg.

Fair enough. I don't think of Agnosticism as another 'religion', I think of it both as a considered response to organized religion on one's own part and as a license to explore one's gestalt and the way the Universe works.

We all stand on the shoulders of giants, but mankind didn't achieve such stupendous feats of intellect and courage such as going to the moon by reading and regurgitating Holy Writ. It was the Skeptics that said "Something is Wrong With This", rolled up their mental sleeves and went to work on their own to solve the mysteries of the Universe, leaving the priests and theologians to natter incoherently in the dust as they have always done.

I would instantly agree with that. I watched National Geographic when I was seven and I saw a special on evolution. It made perfect sense to me that it was impossible for one being to make things in seven days.

I spent the better part of my childhood scaring my teachers and parents half to death with awkward questions they couldn't answer. I do love my family afterall and decided to just believe what I felt was right and stopped making people upset.

Female - check!
Atheist - check!
Love Rome - check!
Wish the guys here were a little less influenced by the Vatican - check!

Agnostic is a way for me to keep my family comfortable. If I dug deep, it isn't that far of a leap to Atheism.

I spent some of the worst parts of my childhood being terrified by my well-meaning religious fundamentalist elders. My flight to the explanations and insights provided by science were _my_ salvation from a life of anxiety. Later on I learned that death is not some entity who lurks on one's path to keep one in constant terror by 'crossing over' and coming back. Now, I can't imagine why I let the religious fundamentalism terrorize me the way that it did.

We all are part and parcel of a race of beings who LITERALLY sent forth some of our own into the heavens to walk upon a foreign celestial body! That one event defines us as adventurers who have achieved in reality what religiously addled brains perceive defectively-- that we are children of the Universe and we have a right to be here. A right that owes no rental payments to someone else's imaginary landlord.

My father, was an alter boy until he was 16. It was a very small town and he would watch our local priest have lunch at his house and get slap *** drunk with my mawmaw while he talked on every congregant's back.

He never really questioned my beliefs until he told me, in a non-related subject, that Religion was simply a form of control for the chaos of life, Faith was a fevor of judgment on others, and Sin was the product of those who pretended to have both.

We were talking about 'The Scarlette Letter' by Nathaniel Hawthorne. When I looked into his eyes, I knew then why he hadn't attended church since he was 16.

Disclaimer: I'm not an atheist (but some of my best friends are- no really they are). But I find it almost as cocky to say that you KNOW there is no god as to say that you KNOW there is a god. I guess I don't KNOW much...

But I would think that if atheism is more prevalent in males perhaps it is because they cannot create a whole new person out of their own bodies and woman (potentially) can.

Having all that amazing creative power (the power to produce a seeming miracle if you will) perhaps it is easier for them to believe in other, greater, creative powers as well... or harder for them to dismiss the possibility...

Or maybe this is just BS on my part...

I am agnostic, and its maybe we are not waiting to make up our minds..Maybe we are just waiting for proof.

I belive in god the way I belive in aliens from outer space. There is the possibility that both might exist but have seen no proof. After all anything is possible.

if you're agnostic then you realize no such proof is possible. unknowable means unknowable. if you think knowing such things as god or the afterlife is possible you're a weak atheist, not agnostic.

but anything is possible.. its possible there will be a cure for aids..its possible that the american government will pull their heads out of their ***'s and do something for the good of the country.. any thing is possible..
