WASHINGTON - The Senate Judiciary Committee subpoenaed the White House
and Vice President **** Cheney’s office Wednesday for documents
relating to President Bush’s controversial eavesdropping program that
operated warrant-free for five years.

Also named in subpoenas signed by committee Chairman Patrick Leahy,
D-Vt., were the Justice Department and the National Security Council.
The four parties have until July 18 to comply, according to a statement
by Leahy’s office.

“Our attempts to obtain information through testimony of
administration witnesses have been met with a consistent pattern of
evasion and misdirection,” Leahy said in his cover letters for the
subpoenas. “There is no legitimate argument for withholding the
requested materials from this committee.”

Leahy’s panel is required to serve the subpoenas to specific people
within the offices named. One is addressed to Gonzales, while the others
are addressed to: David S. Addington, Cheney’s chief of staff; White
House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten, V. Phillip Lago, executive secretary
of the National Security Council - or “other custodian of records”
in their offices.

The subpoenas themselves seek a wide array of documents on the program
from the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks to the present. Among them are any
documents that include analysis or opinions from Justice, the National
Security Agency — which administers the program — the Defense
Department, the White House, or “any entity within the Executive
Branch” on the legality of the electronic surveillance program.

Well, what branch will Cheney deny being a part of now in order to
weasle out of this one? Can't wait for the skeletons in his closet to be
revealed.

I think Jay is tired of seeing our nice country going down the tubes

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush, moving toward a constitutional showdown with Congress, asserted executive privilege Thursday and rejected lawmakers' demands for documents that could shed light on the firings of federal prosecutors.

Bush's attorney told Congress the White House would not turn over subpoenaed documents for former presidential counsel Harriet Miers and former political director Sara Taylor. Congressional panels want the documents for their investigations of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' stewardship of the Justice Department, including complaints of undue political influence.

The Democratic chairmen of the two committees seeking the documents accused Bush of stonewalling and disdain for the law, and said they would press forward with enforcing the subpoenas.

Thursday was the deadline for surrendering the documents. The White House also made clear that Miers and Taylor would not testify next month, as directed by the subpoenas, which were issued June 13. The stalemate could end up with House and Senate contempt citations and a battle in federal court over separation of powers.

well maybe now that the immigration bill is dead Bush will realize that his power base is all but gone from congress...a slew of emails to congress to press the issue of subpoenas may get some action....I do get nervous when I think of Bush/Cheney backed into a corner like a couple of rabid pit bulls...they would do anything I think...beware the false flags...

One of the abiding uncertainties in political washington has been the relationship between Cheney and Bush, on the one hand, and Cheny and the neocons on the other.

The first part is getting a lot of exposure in this last week, thanks to an extraordinary series of articles int eh Washington Post.

I am still digesting and reading it all (the series has links to many documents) and trying to connect it with what I know, so I won't try and summarize it here, other than to say that it shows a Chney dominant over Bush to an extent hardly imaginable.

In October 2006, Bush signed into law the Department of Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2007.

DDAA 07 includes specific provisions which allow the military to take control of normal policy and law enforcement functions at the Federal and State levels.

Sec. 1042 of the DDAA 07 overturns the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878, which prevents the military from intervening in the conduct of civilian government activities, including the conduct of Justice and Law Enforcement. Posse Comitatus has been central to the functioning of constitutional government. (It should be noted that other previous pieces of legislation have already invalidated the substance of Posse Comitatus).

What is significant in these specific provisions of DDAA 07 (Sec. 1042) is that they dovetail the provisions of Bush's National Security Presidential and Homeland Directive (NSPD 51, HSPD 20) enacted on May 9, 2007.

NSPD 51 would essentially scrap Constitutional government in the case of a so-called "Catastrophic Emergency". .

I was reading a similar report months ago, Oceans. Cheney is conniving to the point beyond insubordination. A point un precedented in American Political history. I beleive if someone was looking for the one person pulling the strings on the policies of this Administration, they need to look no further than this man. He is the one in charge and Bush is a puppet. I was reading two months ago that he was working on taking over if Bush reverses course on the policies involving the Middle East, and I don t think assaination is beyond reason to him! Bush knows it and is scared. This would explain many of the times that Bush has seemed confused and unwilling to bend when congress and the people are so against his policies.

These medals are a real pick-me-up, just ask George Tenet!”

“I’m sure the media would like to make this into a big story,” said Bush, “but it’s time to move on. I mean what really happened? So a sitting vice president shot a 78 year old man in the heart and face with a shot gun, I can’t understand why anyone would be interested in something like that. And this whole drinking question, so he had a few barley pops, big whoop! Who am I to judge? You’re talking to guy who would Hoover up a mirror full of coke in my wild days, just think what I would have done to hunting companions.”

“No, this is just another example of liberals trying to trump up a nothing story for political gain,” said President Bush. “Let’s not blame the vice president for discharging a shotgun into the face of a 78 year old man, let’s put the blame where it really lies, on the quail. We are presently looking into this particular bird’s background, just to see if it has any ties to terrorist networks.
