President's Aunt's Statements Ignite Debate Reporting Karen Anderson BOSTON (WBZ) ― President Obama's aunt, 58-year-old Zeituni Onyango of Kenya, lived illegally in the U.S. for years, and has been receiving assistance to stay in Boston. The benefits she's received are federal, not state benefits. However her statements are still re-igniting debate on the campaign trail. Independent Tim Cahill says, "Unfortunately it's typical of people today who think America owes them a living. It used to be you work your way to America and earn the dream. Now everyone wants it delivered on a silver platter and we can't afford it." Republican Charlie Baker says, "I think it's emblematic of what's broken on Beacon Hill and what's broken on Capitol Hill." Baker says day one as Governor he would sign an Executive Order to make it illegal for illegal immigrants to receive state benefits. "This is the kind of thing that outrages regular citizens that pay their taxes, and play by the rules, and believe that government should only be spending its hard earned money on people playing by the rules too." Tim Cahill agrees, and says as Governor he would also start by making it illegal for illegal immigrants to receive state or federal benefits. Cahill says, "These things happen all the time. Aunt Zetuni is one of thousands taking advantage if the system and our Governor's response is to look the other way." What has the Governor done? He says in the 2011 budget, it's now law to check a person's eligibility when applying for unemployment, higher education grants, and state housing assistance. What about other forms like housing and transportation that don't check a citizen's status? The Governor's office says in those cases the federal government prohibits Governor Patrick says has also worked to create a task force that is a partnership with the Inspector General, the Attorney General, the Auditor and the State Comptroller that will help make sure Massachusetts is combining all state resources to prevent and prosecute any fraud related to public benefits. Governor Patrick says, "Illegal immigration is a serious national problem and it deserves a serious national solution, a DNA serious national discussion, and frankly that's not what it gets." I agree with this article. I had to do research into what kind of benefits she received from social security. It makes sense though that when people pay into it, they should get something from it if they are alive to get the payment. She worked here legally while she was legally here and so she had valid work quarters so she was eligible for payment. For all those that legally work here on their green cards, they pay into the system. Some get it in payments when they leave the country after their green card expires. Others come back to the states legally again and work for more quarters and keep doing it until they are old enough to need it and they get the Social Security. We only do this for countries that are reciprocal. So the same would apply in reverse for US citizens on work visas in these other countries. |

In other words she was legally receiving the benefits under our laws.

In other words she was legally receiving the benefits under our laws. How did you arrive at that conclusion based on this article? Do you know how long she worked legally, and what she paid in? What federal benefits would that entitle her to? How does she receive benefits of any kind, when she is not a citizen? You say it is reciprocal, does that mean if I move to Kenya, I could live for free? |

"If I come as an immigrant, you have the obligation to make me a citizen,"
If you come legally. |

Give her a raft, snorkel and a boot in the butt. Problem solved.

"If I come as an immigrant, you have the obligation to make me a citizen," If you come legally. we have no obligation to do anything for anyone... most things in life have to be earned to be worth something she spends ten years on welfare and we are obligated to make her a citizen? what exactly did she earn? |

"If I come as an immigrant, you have the obligation to make me a citizen," If you come legally. She did come legally. I am stating that the benefits she received are legally hers by our laws. |

The question I have and maybe this should be brought up to the legislature. If a person has over ran their visa or green card and are no longer legally here and they apply for the benefits that they are eligible for, shouldn't we make them go through the processing for legal status or mail their money to them in another country?
Because we currently do give them their due on their way out if they want it. |

I believe it is as it should be.
If we get a work visa for another country who recipricates this, it will be the same for us there. We will get paid by their "social security system" when we leave if we want or we can come back and work more later and then when we are ready we get paid for paying in. |
