Topic: serious fluctuations in network speed | |
---|---|
Really. I just noticed..I'm downloading a large file and the download speed fluctuates from like 300kb/s to 20kbs and between. I tried checking what's eating my bandwith but I came up with nothing. Is this just how sh.tty is DSL or what?

I'm no expert but I believe if your DSL is by way of "cable network" then the grid is shared and can be slower with more users and time of day.

interesting...
1. is it only this one site, or other sites as well? 2. if it is all sites, I would suspect your DSL 3. "shared" access is a thing of the past, switching technologies eliminate this "shared" phenom... 4. if it is just this site, they could be throttling their bandwidth... 5. could also be spyware/malware on your pc... perhaps do a manual scan when you get the time you could always reboot your cable modem, or your local router... $.02 |

If you can, put a Linux box between the computer you're downloading from and the modem, and use iptraf to see if you have any undesired traffic.
