I have a friend who is Cherokee, he told me that first they took the
Cherokee land and sent them all to I believe Tennessee, where they prospered then they took that and sent them down the trail of tears to Oklahoma where they have done well again. He said it don't make any difference how many times they take our land we will keep coming back, I admire his tenacity. What was done to them and all Native Americans was shabby indeed. |

The Cherookee, peaceful??? I dont know if I could agree with that! They
ruled through war and conquest of neighboring tribes! Highly intelligent and very proud, most definitely! They recognized and adapted to the onslaught of the European invasion, adopting a Government structure that was compatable to dealing with the Europeans, yet maintaining their traditions! They still scared the heck out of the whiteman though, as most were afraid to venture into these hills. They have changed a loy as the years have gone by. I saw in the link you gave me that 5 yrs after your grandmothers death the Cherokee took away the right of women to vote? That is different than their traditions. What is up with that? They also have race issues!! Rejecting citizenship to the freeman???(descendants of mixed breed blacks?) Seems even they are not immune from politics!!! |

Your friend is correct...A major portion of Tennessee was Cherokee
land...Today...there is only one acre owned by the Cherokee...On it sits a Museum...dedicated to many of the Cherokee that were important in our history...you can walk out back down a trail...at the end of that trail is a mound..in that mound are bodies that were moved from gravesites, from when they built a dam in the 70's I believe, which put all the Cherokee villages under water... Yes...the tenacity is great |

Doesn't mean anything to anyone but me, but my closest friend, Earl, who
is closer than a brother is nearly 100% Cherokee. |

Thats one acre in Tennesse, right JJ? Qualla boundry is a lot bigger
than 1 acre! The last of their land before the round up was in Northern GA. Wasnt it? |

Ok Glen! Your right...I should have said the Cherokee women were
peaceful...a matriarchal society at one time...worked rather well....but all good things must come to an end when the physically stronger of the race decide to take over As far as taking the right to vote from women...pretty obvious isn't it? Feeling the need to adapt to new governmental policy to get along...Of course with men at the helm No they were far from being immune to politics unfortunately... And looking at the other side of my family...my mothers side..her parents 100% Cherokee...you can see that it was apparent that blacks were integrated in alot of cases into the Cherokee tribes... |

Hey Grandpa!!! Congratulations!!!

Boy Glen, not sure of the Quallah thing, all I know is when visiting Red
Clay and the Museum I speak of...it was written that there was only one acre in Tennessee legally held by the Cherokee..I know there are no health facilities in Tennessee for the Cherokee...as I had to go to NC to obtain medical help... |

I love the Cherokee traditions. Its a shame they are forgetting. Maybe
they need you to come back and kick some arse? LMAO!!! REALLY!!!! I just looked it up the land of the Qualla boundary is 57,000 acres. It is not a reservation but a federal land trust area! Owned and governed by the eastern band of the Cherokee! They still follow many of the traditions, like marrying only from a different clan of the 7 clans! While not really enforced they are only allowed to marry another Cherokee! While they have individual land ownership, they can not sell the land outside the tribe. Cherokee's only, Businesses can only employ members of the tribe! They maintain tradition and purity of blood in this way, more so than the western band! |
