So... the other day I bought a pet rock and I was told by multiple sources to walk it. Well, I just took my string and taped it to it, but it wont move!

I tried all of your suggestions, but to no avail.
I poked it with a stick, and it moved, but only a couple of inches. The thing is, it only moves when I poke it, and mysteriously it only moves in the direction I poke it in. 
I'm stumped! I would hate to poke it to death...
