Does anyone here know how to play the guitar? I am trying to teach myself how to play, I have instrutional CD's and book, about how long do you think it will take an average person to learn? Any tips?

It all depends on how good you wanna be, how much you practice and how much natural talent you have.
Its taken me almost 20 years to get to a level i'd call '****'. |

LOL, I see, well I am already "older" so I will just keep at it, if I can strum a tune or two, I'm fine with that.

Learn how to read guitar tablature and you will be able to do an adequate job for just about any song. It's learning to play well enough to improvise in any situation that takes a long time. I've been playing for over 30 years and I still learn new stuff all the time. Unfortunately, it's not all about learning either, but a lot about some mysterious natural ability I don't think I have. I'll never be as good a Joe Satriani or Eric Clapton...

You could pick up on chord progressions in a month or two if you just give it a few minutes every day. That might be a fun place to start. |

If all you want to do is strum songs learn the G, C, D, E, A, Em, and Am chords then learn F and you can play thousands of songs.

take a couple of lessons and pick a handful of songs you like and your teacher will have you playing some of them probably within a couple of lessons...
you can always look up additional lessons online etc. look back in the music section a few pages and you will see old threads with suggestions for online instruction. but a few good personal lessons locally will help you a great deal to begin

If you are into lead guitar playing I suggest Iron Maiden. Their songs have great solos and they aren't that hard to learn. My first solo i learned was from Jimi Hendrix's version of hey joe. Learn blues guitar first and then if you want to be one of those metal maniacs learn some theory and practice those scales!!! Im a pretty good improviser at soloing. One thing you can never get enough of is practice making up solos and phrasing. Jam along to a good backing track. You can usually find some mp3s online that you can download. Keep it original and have fun with it.
