It depends on the smell and how far away. I'm guessing. I never really thought of it.

Its more ofa ratio I believe...the speed of smell is directly proportional based on the amount of time between your last shower and the shower of the smelly guy in line in front of you t the grocery store. Scientists haven't yet confirmed it, but the speed of the cahier may in fact play a role as well!

It really just depends on the wind and its speed, so it's the speed of the wind. The capacity of smelling depends on the smelling capacity of the one doing the sniffing. For example a dog can smell things a mile away, but it's because the wind carried a small amount of particles to his nose and even that small amount is enough for their nose to pickup on it, while us humans aren't as great picking the smell up, unless we sniff in a larger amount, which requires us to be closer to the source. |

the speed of smell would be totally relative to the air pressure and wind currents of where you happen to be.
Farts aren't the only smells kids. Oh and I guess ... the speed of stink ... like something sure stinks about this or that .....would depend on the whistle blowers. |

..i'm thinkin'there's a degree of sphincter pressure that will play a part in the formula...i.e as in whether someone was trying to ease it out as to not point the finger at themself..but i wonder how fast all the occupants of the elevator pick out who they think did it...one should remember that it is best to be exiting the elevator just before letting it blow...that way someone else gets the blame...and you get a good laugh.... |

It should be pointed out that there is NOT a single, set speed of either sound or light. They, like smell, are dependent on various factors. The quoted speed of sound and of light are for specific circumstances, such as light through a vacuum, and sound through a standard air pressure and density. The speed of each through other substances is different.
Since the promulgation of smell through a medium is NOT through radiation (as sound and light are), it would be even more problematic to set any standards. |
