My brother agreed to teach me how to play guitar... BUT he's a very busy guy. I bought a used guitar and he gave me a book to learn some basics. Anyone else got some helpful hints for someone kinda teaching themselves the basics?

That's a huge subject-that's why I'm in the slooow process of writing a method book or 2 for guitar. I recommend "A Modern Method For Guitar", published by Berklee Press.

Anyone else got some helpful hints for someone kinda teaching themselves the basics? Well, lets see... "Do like I do...I bought 2 new guitars (1 electric and 1 elc-acoustic) and they are still in the box they came in! It has been that way for 2 years, and I'm here to tell you... I haven't learned a damn thing! Soooo confusing! Good luck, and pass on any tips you may have, right back at me! Maybe one day...we'll go on the road together! |

Books are so 1990... I need a video tutorial lolz...perhaps, but if you want to go anywhere with it, you'll need to know how to read charts (music). Trust me, if you go to an audition and can't read a chart, you'll be dismissed immediately! |

Oh this is just for me to learn, not making a career change

i taught myself, and all i can say is trust your ears. they will let you know what's up

Start with tabs, tune the instrument to the sound you like (personally I always liked drop-D), make your fingers bleed so they heal up and won't bleed anymore, listen to other guitarists, read...unfortunately youtube can't teach theory very well which is why I recommend picking up a book on musical theory.

btw...if you can get a book/website of scales and arpeggios, that will help you. And always practice with a metronome (there are some online for free)

Start learning chords from the books or online. You can practice scales as well.

Why would you buy new guitars and never use them?! I started teaching myself how to play a while ago... then moved and haven't picked it up since. But, I will change that soon. |

Why would you buy new guitars and never use them?! I started teaching myself how to play a while ago... then moved and haven't picked it up since. But, I will change that soon. At the time I bought both guitars, I had "BIG" plans to learn to play overnight, pick up a gig within a week, cut an album in a months time, and be the "Stevie Ray Vaughn play-a-like" for fame and fortune! But, I know the first step is to take them out of the shipping box! I'm working on it....just having to build up steam now...but watch out when I get that steam... You got to realize, at my age...steam don't come along as fast as it used to...but I'm working on it. "I know I can, I know I can, I know I can, wooohooo (building steam) I know I can, yes I can, yes I can....chooooochooooo!" |

I hope you're joking about them still being in the box!

I hope you're joking about them still being in the box! Seriously speaking: I have had both out of the box, and looked at and picked around on them maybe a total of 15 minutes, then back into the box! Then told myself I would start the regiment of learning guitar...even ordered DVD instructions, a book or two...but they are around here somewhere (guitars never came back out of the box). That's where the situation is at present date. I think about it occasionally, just seems like not enough hours in a day. My intentions are still there. |
