Well I must be totally honest it was not the first time I tried to quit. Did once for 2 years then life and stress and weakness caused me to restart once more.

Smoking gets it grip on you like a spider does a fly in a web and does not let go easy. Did I enjoy smoking hell yeah I did I did not enjoy the smell it left on me and my clothes or finally the constantly coughing I was dealing with at the end.

It is not as easy as some think but in order to do so the one smoking really has to want it bad or it will never happen....noway

I got lucky I found that reason and from the day I laid them down the last time I have not regretted it. For me this time the urge has never reared it's head my way.......to pick up another cigarette.

I have friends that all smoke even my son picked up the habit. That is their choice I do not harp on them for that only makes other smoke more. If and when they choose to quit for good that will be up to them and no one else....

I have realized that too, TxsGal. Good comment. Those of us that still smoke KNOW it's wrong and we KNOW it's bad for our health, and we KNOW it upsets others around us, but we do it anyway. And many of us do want to quit. It's just so seductive and soothing, and that is what makes it so hard. But for most of us smokers, we have to want to do it on our own, not because someone tells us we need to, although there are a few exceptions. I will always support fully someone that quits, even though I have not. I will never encourage or seduce someone into this VERY addictive habit. My sister thought about it, and I successfully talked her out of it.

I'm proud of you, TXs, never go back. NEVER! It brings me joy to know you are not a slave to this terrible addiction. I hope that one day soon I can also free myself of this plague that has hounded me for 24 years.

It's may addiction..really that simple, there is nothing cool about it, I have walked away from every other substance I have ever tried, this is a tough one for me. I hate smoking...

We were dupped when we were kids..letting us buy them, smoke on the high school grounds, not teaching us how bad they were...really no reason for these young people to even start now.

Ya never know what your addiction is going to be..

"Got a Match?"

"Some of the appeals of a lighted cigarette derive from the appeals of fire in general. Fire is the symbol of life, and the idea of fire is surrounded by much superstition. In this connection, it is interesting to note that traces of superstition can be seen in the smoking habits of modern man. For instance some people never will light three cigarettes on one match. It is said that this superstition is based on experiences during World War I. As three soldiers were lighting up the third man was hit when the light of a match flared up for the last time. Our custom of lighting another smoker's cigarette for him may sometimes have an erotic significance, or it may serve as a friendly gesture. Match and cigarette are contact points."

Interesting pints. I never smoke in anothers car, or home, etc. This am someone was in my truck who didn't smoke but I lit up anyway.
Driving is my downfall. Yes, can watch the smoke as did as a small child from my elders. Yes, am hooked and worry it may affect me and don't want to have copd. It's a horrible disease and terrible to hear someone who has it (my assistant). The tobacco companies have us over the barrel, including the govt.
I read somewhere, it was also mans fascination with fire, not just smoke. The jist of it was that we somehow smoked because we had control over fire and our early fascination with it. It's been years since reading that article. It's the one way I don't take care of myself. Am a vegetarian, exercise, eat right, avoid all sorts of junk/sugar but this has its hold. I like it. In tha am, before bed and as a reward. Financially is the real reason I can see giving it up soon to save 4.40 a day. Thats at the very least 125. a month. Yet it will be more because I usually do more than a pack a day. Have cut down tho, it was 2 but now maybe 25 a day.

Why do we breathe....

discuss.

laugh

Seriously though...we can slant psychological reasonings to justify anything..

there is no need to justify why one smokes....they CHOOSE to.

I heard one time that the body thinks that nicotene is a vitamin and one person told me that it was especially vitamin B.

"I Like to Watch the Smoke"

In mythology and religion, smoke is full of meaning. Its floating intangibility and unreal character have made it possible for imaginative man to see therein mystery and magic. Even for us moderns, smoke has a strong fascination. To the cigarette smoker, the clouds he puffs out seem to represent a part of himself. Just as most people like to watch their own breath on cold winter days, so they like to watch cigarette smoke, which similarly makes one's breath visible. This explains the emotional attitudes of many toward smoke. "Smoke is fascinating," said one of the people we interviewed. "I like to watch the smoke. On a rainy day, I sort of lie in a haze in the middle of the room and let my thoughts wander while I smoke and wonder where the smoke goes."

The desire to make things is deep-rooted -- and smoke is manufactured by the smoker himself. Smoking provides satisfaction because it is a playful, creative activity. This fact was well stated by one cigarette devotee as follows: "It's a fascinating thing to watch the smoke take shape. The smoke, like clouds, can form different shapes.... You like to sit back and blow rings and then blow another rings through the first ones. You are perfectly relaxed."

That's what bonfires are for. Throw some green wood in and enjoy the sight. I don't need to light up a cancer stick for that.

No doubt. Sneaky little bostids those tobaccky companies are with their "brilliantly ethical" business and marketing tactics. Wonder if healthcare lobbyists are secretly wishing more people smoked, to enable a dependable revenue source.
