I see the US sending planes chock full of food and supplies to another country, it irritates me. Not because I don't want to help others, but we've got people starving in this country, why not help Americans? If catastrophe struck the US, who would help us?

Seems it takes a crisis to bring people together...why can't we help
each other all the time? |

The situation with the earthquake in Haiti is a temporary problem and the food is a temporary help. Poverty in any country is a permanent problem and requires a permanent solution. The aid we are providing could not be maintained permanently for Haitians.
And we do have many welfare programs in this country to deal with the poor and the homeless. I agree that these programs are not well run and could be much more efficient but we do have them. |

I don't think anyone would help us...I think the US needs to stop sticking their nose into other countries businesses and worry about ourselves...but this is a natural disaster...and helping them will give us some well needed good PR with the rest of the world...good question

I think we need to help them and I would be disappointed in this country if we didn't, but I don't think we would get the same help from others though

We don't get help from other countries, never have. Some people take notice and say something though....

Not because I don't want to help others, but we've got people starving in this country, why not help Americans? If catastrophe struck the US, who would help us? Because the problems in THIS country are easily ignored. The people of this country, for the most part ( and there are some exceptions ) simply doesn't give a damn. There are SO many charities that wanna tug at your heartstrings and make you give money for use in Africa or whatever.... Yet...the thousands upon thousands of homeless families and starving children here in America are basically ignored BECAUSE of all the welfare programs. People figure...well...we don't need to help them..they can just go get welfare. Problem with that is....to GET welfare, you must have a physical address. If you are homeless, you don't have the address. The condition of the economy has caused a whole lot more problems than people are willing to actually SEE. |

Not because I don't want to help others, but we've got people starving in this country, why not help Americans? If catastrophe struck the US, who would help us? Many would,, here is a small bit of information regarding aid after Hurricane Katrina,,, "Of $454 million in cash that was pledged by more than 150 countries and foreign organizations, only $126 million from 40 donors was actually received. The biggest gifts were from the United Arab Emirates, $100 million; China and Bahrain, $5 million each; South Korea, $3.8 million; and Taiwan, $2 million." Much of the rest of the money was redirected to american 'charitable'organizations such as red cross. And you are contradicting yourself by saying, "BECAUSE OUR NEWS DOESNT REPORT IT< DOESNT MEAN IT DOESNT HAPPEN.." but you previously posted a washingtonpost.com url. Make up your mind! She is not contradicting herself. She said that just because any particular news source didn't report it, doesn't mean it didn't happen. Meaning, you often have to search many WRITTEN news sources rather than just depending on the major television new networks to provide you with all the information. Or, it's very possible to miss the story if they only do it once. The information is out there, you just have to go look for it. |

Finding the truth takes reading a news source that isn't controlled by America. I completely agree. Finding out the truth takes reading multiple new sources. |

The aid we are providing could not be maintained permanently for Haitians. And we do have many welfare programs in this country to deal with the poor and the homeless. I agree that these programs are not well run and could be much more efficient but we do have them. Funny thing is, a vast majority of those programs are fed and loc funded. Our program, where we feed real meals to those unfortunate, relies ONLY on the charity of others. No a cent comes from any gov. I've had extensive background training in gov programs and know health codes and violations and we are impeccably(SP?) clean. We give out food also (emergency), referrals, clothing, blankets, hygiene items, even some dog food occasionally. We have one or two private benefactors and at times things have come out of our own pockets. WE make dinner for 70-90 a night (up a 1000 quarter than 6 months ago), people from groups and churches come to cook, and give out food for the one day we are closed. The govt run programs are wired by so many 'rules' and guidelines, it makes it impossible to get much done. Charity is alive and well in the US but not from your govt. 2 of our local food banks got their grants cut last year, imagine that? No food for the poor. And it was NOT the Obama admins who did it.... |
