Topic: Where would you live IF? | |
---|---|
you had all the money you need to move and no ties...?? And why would you choose this place?? Wow I have been restling with this question for a long time. Having lived all over the USA I know many communities and climates. I must admit living where the climate is not so harsh and things have a long growing season is a big plus to me. Battleing snow and ice is not high on my list as something I want to do as I get older. However dodging homeless camping in almost anyplace they can squat gets old. Sad thing about really great climate is it tends to draw the poor and dispossed from other areas. Nor would driving and hour just to get a loaf of bread or mingle with a friend for a little company so the romantic idea of living out in the country hasn't much appeal either. I have learned just when you think you are going to have a little peace that remote property next to you can suddenly become biker central or a massive pig farm. Having kids boared out of their mind is not a lot of fun either. If I knew then; what I know now, it would probably be someplace where I could get a three plus bedroom house (even if you think you won't need the space you will if you got it is less temptation to "move up" and loose your equity) and I would buy a house that has been owned so I didn't take the hit of new house that might be a lemon and there are probably no trees. Mass transit; when times are hard it is nice not to have to support a car and great when you have teens or you are unable to drive. Not a bad perk if you have to travel and don't want to pay parking. I want some kind of college or university ( a brain goes stagnant with out youth around and colleges even community colleges offer many perks for low cost entertainment. You can almost always get a tenant if you need one. Some place where there is enough water but high enough it is highly unlikely to flood (wind sucks but water damage is rarely covered by insurance). With utilities and taxes skyrocketing I would look for something in the middle of the block on or near a street that going to be cleared first in a storm. With medical expenses and services critical as you age or have kids probably a county or state government location because they always seem to have the best community services. Having a good public hospital or VA center is a plus. Avoiding some place that has terrible pollution or trash disposal problems. I would definitely want a dual power system because it is a drag to have no lights but with gas/fireplace at least you are not going to freeze your arse off. At least two bathrooms is essential as is at least one accessible enterance. One place I would not live is near a K-mart. They are nortorious for operateing in declineing neighborhoods and you can just about guess your property value is going to eventually drop. |

A fortified, ultra modern 2 story home on a mountain in New Hampshire so as to be nearer to like minded folks. Is it New Hampshire or Vermont that has long been trying to secede from the nation??? Power to the people!!! |

It would have to be Japan, probably in Osaka, or a prefecture of Tokyo or Yokohama. Beautiful culture, amazing landscape, awesome food, plenty of jobs, and Geisha! Yokoso, Nippon!

I wouldn't move an inch. I'm supposed to be here. Now more than ever, I know I was supposed to be here in the first place. I only wish I'd met her sooner.

i'd stay pretty close to where i am now (toronto). the kids' friends are here, their schools are here, their family (and mine) are here, so all our ties are nearby.
i'd sure as heck travel all over europe each summer though. |
