If I'm hungry, I eat. Free or not. But, I'm usually one of the last to leave any 'gathering',so if I know food is going to be thrown out, I'll always find room for it. Few things p1ss m3 0ff more than wasting food!!!!! I grew up with a mother like that and it is partly the reason I am overweight. She couldn't stand to see food go to waste....hence we ate more than we should have. I STILL have a hard time throwing food away. We are very frugal at my house with groceries, yet I hate to see something go out of the fridge into the trash. Any big gathering my family had, we always had extra people included that maybe wouldn't get a holiday meal. They were welcomed into the fold. Not only did they get a meal, they got friends. I agree OP that corporations do waste entirely too much food. I can see sanitary reasons why they can't give it away, but it does seem like things could be scaled back.....and when it's gone, it's gone. You see this with big corporations in other areas as well, not just food. The amount of "stuff" that people could use but gets throw away is astounding. I grew up with a family of 8 children,an nothing went to waste,an as we grew older an they moved away,then it was scaled down,but nothing ever went to waste,an if their was any waste, then the dogs or cats would get it mixed with their food,even the chicken ,an ducks had some mixed with their feed. The OP's  For sanitary reasons?
So they couldn't share that night? I do understand in what you are saying,But the Op's will be the one's who will cut back on hours,to make their bonus's bigger? But will Holler,UNITE for humanity?

I'm what's known as a compulsive over-eater, so I tend to always eat too much, free or not. No OA here in small-town USA.
The unfortunate thing about the reasoning that food has to be consumed to not be a waste is that if a person over-eats adn in doing so mutilates their body with excessive calories and fat, it is still a waste. Preparing too much food is a waste whether it is eaten by people who really don't need that much, or if it is thrown out. The only thing that makes it not wasteful would be to distribute it to homeless and hungry people who don't get enough to eat in their day-to-day lives. But to answer the original question, yeah I do gorge myself, but it doesn't matter if it's free or not. |

I work for a food broker so I do these kind of events all the time. It is promotion. It is a way to get people to try new products before they spend the money on something that they have no idea whether or not they will like it.
The thing I am surprised about is that the food went to waste. I have not been to a single event in the last three years that any leftover product was not picked up by the local food bank as soon as the event was over. So if you are involved in these types of events maybe next time you can suggest that the food be donated. |
