Topic: U.S. attempting to regulate the Internet | |

I know, I know, someone will come and comment that "youtube is not a reliable source but anyway
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qy_Gxtvfsnk Here is related: New rules on Net neutrality could mean loss of jobs In recent months, The Star has reported extensively on the down economy and resulting job losses. We had hoped that the worst days were behind us, but now the Federal Communications Commission is considering putting new regulations on the Internet that could kill jobs in Indiana and across the country. The FCC is debating an issue this month that many people call Net neutrality, and it is something that we all need to watch closely. Ultimately, the FCC wants to regulate the Internet and we are concerned that the agency's actions could bring new investment in broadband networks to a halt. When the telecom companies are investing, it means more work for skilled labor. And even during this down economy, the telecom companies have been investing billions of dollars in new infrastructure. That's good news for the Communications Workers of America because investment in wired and wireless broadband means jobs. We think that Net neutrality is a bad idea. The Internet is working fine. Telecom companies are investing and the CWA is building the networks that are the future of the Internet. New regulations are not needed. Child porn is against The Law,and anyone who deals in it should be sent to jail. What worries me,Government watching over 'political speech'. That could get very 'Big Brother'. be seeing you

How do you think the cops catch child pornogrphers and pedo's? IT'S REGULATED ALREADY! That's not regulation, that's utilization of the net. Regulation is an entirely different idea. |

Oh no, RULES!!! how will we and the internet survive? (rolls eyes)
There is not any information as to what the regulation will involve but people hear the word and all hell breaks loose. Interesting. The Fcc regulates the airwaves and we still have as much crap as ever on the idiot box. Im sure it wont affect what crap will be on the internet. And Im pretty sure OBama isnt remotely involved in whatever is being considered right now by the FCC. He is frying bigger fish. |

Actually what I see is a bigger crackdown on free speech over the web coming. Like for example, how often do you see a site like youtube remove content that is not for copyright related reasons? It happens more often then you may think. I'd be very worried about something like this, because the more free speech is taken away, the less control we have in getting messages out there, and the more control the mainstream media has in just what is shown and what is hidden. |

I respect that. I just dont think it will change much. FCC still oversees television and it hasnt changed much, if anything its less strict. As for what networks and websites choose to include or not include, the dollar speaks. They have a right to make a profit and when they see that profit threatened by words or actions that could cost them consumers,, they have every right to decide to pull it. |

For example, there was a medical emergency such as a widespread viral outbreak, and a group of people take it upon themselves to perpetrate a hoax rumor that the vaccine for the viral outbreak was dangerous and the cause of the illness. Many thousands of people belive this hoax rumor and avoid the vaccination, thereby endangering many more lives. The virus spreads throughout society because so many people did not recieve the vaccination because of the hoax rumor and millions of innocent children and elderly people lose their lives for no reason.Should the perpetrators of the hoax rumor be identified and prosecuted for the deaths?I think so.

Perhaps but in doing so don't they infringe on our constitutional rights to free speech? It just seems very Orwellian you know? Like if you believe this, this or this, you're a threat to them and must be taken care of. |

Yeah, free speech is always a touchy subject. I think it is sad people NEED to have their speech regulated because of their willingness to use words to put others in harms way.
