Simply question...Should they and if so why?

I say Yes bc, this breed is and has been agressive in nature for many years. Also this breed has too much of a history of being incontrollable. I know that some may say "Bad owners create bad dogs" but, that argument only goes so far, I think.
Any thoughts?

yes they should. in fact they should be put down, the ones that have killed people bc i have been attacked by one and now i have this fear of dogs that i have never had before. i cannot be around large size dogs without feeling very uneasy all because of this terrible experience.

Actually I have said that bad owners create bad dogs, in most cases. Neglected dogs are dangerous too. I have had mixed breeds, two lab/pits that were wonderful dogs, but I was very careful to train one of them, the other was not trained but well taken care of. Both were loveable as hell.

I see lots of pits here in tennessee. Lots of them are strays and meet up with other strays, and that is dangerous thing. I see many being used for protection, tied to trees and forced to be mean. That is irresponsible. I also see full breed pits with children and family's that take very good care of them and they are no problem at all.

I just think that often people don't know how to care for a pit, and don't us common sense. For instance I would never trust ANY dog around small children. A month or so ago I watched as two small children abused a tiny puppy and in doing so broke it's leg, which has not properly healed because the owner didn't bother to take it to the vet. The two kids next door that harmed the dog probably didn't learn a lesson either because the parents didn't bother to enlighten them. I would never trust any dog with a new born and yet people do all the time. It's the ignorance of people themselves that cause most cases of problems with all dogs.

I have a good friend that has two very large german shepards that are wonderful around everyone. But I myself was attacked by german sheperds used to protect a home I was working in. Should sheperds be banned too? I think all dogs can be dangerous under certain circumstances.

I would not have a pit anymore, only because I am older and I am not as quick as I used to be, so a dog that powerful is too much for me, yet people often get dogs not suited to them.

I don't know the answer, I don't think banning them will work either. Another dog will replace them in the ban list instead.

I'm sorry you had that experience. I too was attacked by sheperds as I said in my previous post, but after a few years I got over that, though I am far more aware too, so in a way I learned from the experience not to automatically trust a dog in any situation.

I have wondered about this. A big dog is a powerful animal that most people don;t understand the danger of or don't care. They think it is a lark and nothing will happen to them because most dogs are loyal to who feeds them. Or they can just destroy the animal if it gets out of hand. Not always having that choice in time makes me think there ought to be some kind of limits on having them in control. I have always thought a muzzeled dog was not only cruel but useless but I wouldn't keep a bear in close contact with humans and I think dogs can be just as dangerouse. Specially big dogs that are often very poorly cared for and have health issues both physically and emotionally from being forced into a "human" environment where they don't get the space, exercise, or nutrition and hydration they need to to be healthy.

Only if we can ban or put down stupid people.

All you do when you work to ban a specific breed type is shift the nasty owners to a different breed. Instead of punishing the dog, punish the owners. Remember when it was German Shepherds, Rottweilers, and Dobermans? Now it's "pit bulls". And there's no consistency among "pit bulls", it's a generic term. So, are you killing the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the American Pit Bull terrier, the mini Bull terrier, the American or English Bulldogs? Which breed are you doing in?! It's also becoming Cane Corsos, English Mastiffs, and Presa Canarios, and they weren't bred for that either.

The majority of people don't know what kind of dog they're looking at unless their told. I have a Dogo Argentino or an Argentinian Mastiff. Because she's on the small side foolish people run in fear screaming "pit bull". Rather unfair, IMO. Especially when she's wagging her tail, smooching someone else, who's willing to meet the dog instead of judge her. A friend in Washington gets that with his Enlgish Bulldogs. I can't tell you the amount of times I've seen the Humane Society and the SPCA mis-label a dog, because they don't know what they're looking at.

People need to train themselves and their children how to react around dogs, big and little ones. Heck, I've been bit more times by snippy little Chihuahuas, and a Golden Retriever, then any "pit bull".

Pit Bulls are still one of the most highly decorated dogs in the military. They also still have a consistently lower rate of bite issues then small dogs, and labrador retrievers. Heck, about half of the "pit bulls" that you hear about on TV aren't actually "pit bulls", they're usually lab mixes. But because the news gets its ratings by screaming out "pit bulls" those breeds get wronged. Even with regards to their pit fighting history, people don't realize that children were in those rings with the dogs, and the dogs COULD NOT turn on children or else they were killed, immediately.

I'd sooner trust those "pit bulls" then most small dogs, and all humans.

Even Chihuahua's can bite as you have said, but it's still all about training and being consistent.

Here's my pit/mix and chihuahua. I guarantee you I will bite before they do.

I have known quite a few pitbulls. The only aggressive ones that I have met are that way from bad owners.

All dogs can be aggressive, bigger dogs get a bad rap but little ones can be vicious also.

If people had decided to train and breed Great Danes to brutally fight each other, the stigma would be with Great Danes today instead of Pit bulls.

There are mentally unstable dogs just like people but it is not breed specific.

It is the owners who want to have a mean dog that brings fear to people and they do things to the animals to make them be this way that are at fault.

Dont ban dogs. I agree. Make people responsible for the dogs they have.

Thanks..

The lab/pit has a new home on a fence 10 acre farm with another white sheperd (also a rescue) that was very shy and needed a buddy. I still miss her, but she's got more room to run than I could give her and she's happy to have another larger dog to play with. I still have Munch who is the 2 years old chihuahua in the picture, who now has another rescued black chihuahua to play with. I love animals, sadly here we have no laws that force people to be responsible for their pets, so therefore they aren't in too many cases. I've taken in at least 15 dogs in the last 3 1/2 years and found them permanent homes. Very sad because I can't take them all in. Most of the strays are larger dogs, pit mixes are quite often the larger number of rescues here.

why ban pitbulls? its us humans that are to blame for certain animal behavior, dogs act out of fear and protect themselves,or even their young. They could even just act like that cause their previous owner abused them(also rabies could play a factor as well) and now they just hate or are afraid of people.even i was nearly atacked by an animal but i wont and will never hold it against it cause i know that they were probably abused by theyre owners or mistreated.

Shes also a good scary lookin dog if someone tries to break in.

They are just dogs.

Dont buy them or adopt them if you have a problem with them, or fear them around your children.

if you have a dog

and you buy homeowners insurance, they will require you to keep liability for your dog. and it doesnt matter if it is a pit bull or not

I've already been through that. I couldn't get homeowner insurance without a special provision for my dogs

and if someone sneaks into your yard at night and gets bitten. you are liable

Yes there is provision for all dog but mention Pit, Rott or German Shepard and you will find it VERY $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ to have it written if they will write it at all!!!!
