You boot up into the "last known good configuration" mode. Glad it worked for you! You don't need to do the diagnostic startup now. Just run your antivirus & antispyware programs & remove any found. Sites like beemp3 are not safe & should be avoided. You may think your downloading a music file & end up with porn or a virus. Got it, and SO agree on the mp3 downloads!!! ... Of course, I continue to tell her that ... AND? Oh, yeah, she obviously listens well, not! Hopefully this put the fear of losin' her beloved pc into her!!! We will see, sigh! Doubt it really ... We only stopped sharin' it a week ago ... She's on a learnin' curve that is part and parcel of a mothers often expensive journey! She is absolutely fuming at the mp3 news as we speak, she so loves music (apple near the tree and all) ! Aside, just had to buy a new orthodontics retainer this week. Any safe FREE sights to upload music from ??? Thanx again, my hero ... Salute!!! any music download is a risk...for myself, I usually just go to a site like pandora, and just listen to what I want to hear....then again, I have no idea how to use an mp3, either ![]() Me either, Bryan ... ![]() ![]() Our cell phones are players ... she knows how to rip it from the pc to phone ... I'm not ready ... ![]() And, obviously the pc is a big player, w/ risks as evidenced here. Besides, mp3s further compress the sound ... I miss analog ... I'm an acapella sort anyway ... ![]() ![]() |

I second the Pandora recommendation. It's an internet radio station where you can input your favorite bands and it plays their music and other bands in the same vein. It's a good way to try out other bands you may enjoy.
Since downloading free music is not legal, you end up in shady parts of the internet to get them. Problem is, many times they are loaded with free viruses and pornography if you're not careful; or the RIAA may pay you a free visit and come knocking on your door. With that said, I'd rather not post where to download illegal free music here. |

I'm a gullible dumbarse ... gonna need to get myself up to speed and a few miles ahead of her ...she's so smart! Yikes again ... ![]() |

I dont know computer talk, but mine crashed due to some anti virus stuff that kept appearing on my screen. Anyhow, I restarted it and pressed one of the function keys repeatedly (f8 or f10,,not sure) until I had the list of advanced options. I had to choose restore to factory and that seemed to work. I had a computer in the condition it was when I purchased it. Lost my files, but kept my computer. Just had to start over once it was reset to factory.

That's why I chose the 'last known good configuration' ... That choice takes you back pre~event ... not to the very beginning/starting from scratch! Always optimal to keep your precious data, if/when possible. I got lucky this time, phew!!! |

When you have a toothache do you grab the pliers & yank it out your head. No, you go to a professional dentist & get it done right. Trying to fix major computer issues on your own almost always leads to screwing things up worse. Take it to a reputable shop. I'm not talking about some corporate joke like geeksquad or whatever; ask around, I'm sure there's a company in your area that knows what they're doing. Sure, you got your computer working again but you lost all your data. |

last.fm is a legitimate free music (and paid version) for US residents...they also offer free music downloads on select artists. They have a desktop player and you can create your own station and ban music you don't like....make it your own :) I choose last.fm over Pandora

If you are NOT using Firefox yet, you should definitely switch, then install WOT on it, which when used with search engines, e-mail or any other place that has a link, WOT is there to let you know if it's safe (green circle) or bad (red circle) and does not use any extra resources being that it is a plugin for Firefox. Use WOT with your anti-virus and firewall for added protection. Believe me when I say it will greatly reduce the chances of getting a virus.

WOT should have nothing to do with Comcast suite protection.... |

And, Mo_Muirnin, Safari w/ Mac??? Better than Firefox ... only thing compatible??? What's the story?
I'm new to Macs ... 1 week in ... THANX! |

No, Firefox ... wouldn't let Comcast spyware, firewall, etc run ... would ya say to forget about the Comcast and go Firefox w/ WOT? I did like Firefox soooooo much better, seamless operationally ...

Yeah, not thrilled w/ Safari so far ... It is the latest Snow Leopard Mac, heard it might still have bugs interfacing wise ...

|

Wot is a great addition and I would, in my personal opinion, get rid of Mcafee and find a suitable antivirus for Mac (although mac's don't get many viruses, one reason they're so great to have) Then i'd install Web of trust on firefox.
