As someone who rescues "throw away" pets all the time, I hope you are prepared for an animal.
Animals need to be treated like children. They do not have the capacity to understand right and wrong like some people assume. They are not born with a handbook and they especially do not think like humans (meaning they can't act like we always want them to). Most animals from the pound are special needs; they are either high spirited or have health issues which is why they were given up or ran away in the first place. Think long and hard about whether you have the time to spend with an animal. They suffer from separation anxiety when you leave them alone. A single dog should never be left in the backyard. Exposing them to loneliness and the elements can be cruel. They should be treated like part of the family. Would you leave a family member in the garage or backyard all day? If you adopt, I suggest you immediately enroll in obedience classes. Both you and the dog will learn to communicate and it helps to bond you together. Normally, I would say good luck to you but I am more concerned for the animal. I wish the animal luck and love in the world. Just like a child, he didn't ask to be born, and probably the result of an irresponsible pet owner that didn't spay or neuter his parents. |

you better be willing to handle the responsibility because they are more like children than dates. unless you're into that.

I love my dog.. He's like a child and extremely spoiled... Melody is right, be sure you can and want to be devoted b/c things change just like with kids... If I want to go away I either have to kennel him, take him or get someone to watch him.. I always try to get someone to watch him so he will be at home or a friends home, cared for, loved and paid attention to... I think kennels can be helpful in a pinch but they don't give dogs the love, affection and attention they need and are used to... just my 2 pennies...

Um, not to be indelicate here, but I really don't think a dog is a good substitute for a woman. If you're just out for companionship maybe, but I get the impression you're wanting more, so please don't get the dog!

Until the dog is not longer needed or loved and then he is 'thrown away'. The idea of using or buying animals in this way makes me sick. In the 18 years of pet rescue work that I've done -- I have grown to dislike humans for this reason. |

And as soon as the holiday is over, they're abandoned. Very selfish thing to do. |
