well *I* deserve my social security and medicare (I dont really get food stamps. I just made that part up)

but then I dunno if social security counts as a welfare entitlement since you pay into it all your life before getting it. maybe it is, maybe not, I dunno

You pay into it, but that money went right into someone else's social security check. Social welfare is redistribution of resources. So when you were a working individual... you gave money and it went to someone else. Now someone is paying into the system to cut your check.

We need to cut a little deeper into the checks of those who make 50 Grand or more and distribute the wealth so those SSD checks will stretch a little farther.

I don't think I will get it by the time my turn comes around...I'll be 49 and I have paid into since I was 15...yes since 15. I have to work till 62 or even 65 or to really benefit 70, for me to get any of it.

Not really.
If you are injured or have a mental condition that keeps you from being employable, you can file for SSI, State or, SSD Federal. You cannot, not allowed to, have any type of income while you wait for approval or denial. If you are a male, you can get Food Stamps, no medicaide.

If you run out your savings and still want to keep your application active, you will usually wind up on the streets. The only way I have seen folks float and keep a roof is cheat until they get approved. Do work under the table.

More times than not, the application takes at least a year to process and the majority are denied. Then, you get an Attorney. They appeal and you wait again until SSA approves you or you go to court.
On average, it takes 2 years to process an application.

Not completely accurate here but close. Getting medicaid depends on your income and which program you qualify for, not if you are male or female. You should be eligible for foodstamps and A.N.D if you are disabled.

Also do not cheat and work while you wait for the SS, you will get caught and you will be in trouble. If you are so sick that you need SS you should not be capable of working anyway, right?

I think that you're allowed to make up to $900 or so a month in addition to your SS

EDIT: I looked it up. its $980 a month

I bring in $1200 a month in private disability insurance in addition to SS. so if I went to work I would lose a couple hundred a month

A little off topic but--anyone old enough here to remember prez Johnson saying that it will only taqke 3 years and 9 bill. dollars to fix the problems of the poor in this country??? that was about 1963 i think it was!!!--Anyway--3 or 4 trillion $$$ later- Still a problem????? Don't say it's so!!!smokin

I don't think 70 is an unreasonable age for Social Security retirement. we are living better and healthier in old age than when it was introduced

my da is 74 and plays golf every other day. He says he would still be happy working if it wasn't for mandatory retirement from Sears

so he works part time as a greens keeper (only for the discounted green fees hahaha)

Your Dad is doing good. My Dad isn't and he's 71. He can't walk far because he can't breathe due to severe COPD. He's looking frail. My mom is 71 too. She can't walk far either. Btw, on some days far can mean to the backyard for either one of them. Mom worked til she was 70 but has an injury that causes great pain and she uses a cane. Some days she needs help getting to the kitchen. My ex's Dad died of a heart attack at 72.

You can too get Medicaid, if you're male!

Don't forget to mention that when you get approved, you receive a retroactive lump sum check going back to the initial date that you applied for Social Security.

Also, you can get state aid while you're waiting for the social security application to be processed.

Eligiblity of Medicaid differs from state to state, so some men qualify for medicaid without depends or some other state medicaid spin off program.

Yes, the system isn't perfect. Most people get denied the first time around. You can appeal without an attorney. Also, that is why worker's comp is there.

Very simplistic response.

It is the fool who represents himself in court.

The average wait is 1 year to get the first rejection. The appeal can take another year.

Many of us live paycheck to paycheck. No extra money to save up for emergencies. The couple months you go without paying the mortgage, the house is gone. Tent cities are getting a little more acceptable. That is an alternative to fending for yourself on the streets.

No money and the food stamps run out. If you're in a good size city, resturants throw out edible food patrons don't eat.

If it's a family, they just have to struggle more than the single person.

The war on poverty introduced by Johnson, started by Kennedy, was well intended, but just beaurocrats determining needs. Poverty will never go away, but it can be reduced.

When political agendas and social norms determined by elite and priviledge continue to be put into legislation and acts and policy... there will continue to be injustice.

Exactly, there are some social service agencies that give aid without asking question, though most do.
And if a church doesn't have a food pantry, they will help or at least point you in the right direction!

But by all means, don't let me stand in the way of someone's pride to ask for help. Because G-d forbid that you been seen as a welfare recipient!

And there is your bottom line...so poverty continues and increases at as steady rate as of late...

Remember what happend with kennedy--He tried to right some wrongs. get rid of the cia--stop the war in vietnam--And his biggest mistake, printing our own money as apposed to the fed. This would have put some power back to the people---but that ended and Johnson--a corrupt million-air from the south took over--Hello transfer of wealth!! Still going on. Funny how he got the middle class to pay for all this--He just kept making money!!!And those like him.

Just realized you secret.
Folks who ain't done the process don't have a clue to what the person goes through.
Just a matter of time and the wolf will be at many of their doors. Let's hope they haven't taken the Gov. word that all will be fine and saved to be able to do the hunker down thang.

Economy is cyclical. So good times and bad times... well, poverty can ebb and flow just like the economy. Just because it is increasing now, doesn't mean that it won't decrease. But just like unemployment there is always be some 'base' rate.

That is why all people should get involved in the political process to elect only those who care about social justice from bottom to top . Millions of people do not bother to vote, do not follow politics, and shy away from any given policy . Politics is vital for any society and all people should get involved one way or another .

All I can say is I am glad that my boys are older and can help me now...

When they were younger I worked my azz off taking care of them alone..and I

was NEVER able to get any assistance because I made too much money..but I

barely made ends meet. I would absolutely hate to being going through those

now...with little one. Since I have payed into the system for over 30 years

now I have no problem with ANYONE who needs help and can get it..to get it.

I think you are right here--but there is a problem now--Jobs that were cyclic in the past are gone. Over seas me thinks!. new jobs will not be created like before. people who would have found another job--or the economy turns up etc. Times are different and the old way is gone. "New world order" here we come!!! Obama for what ever reason did the right thing with the tax on incoming tires. Now every one is having a fit because they cost 30% more. trust me---he will change it and all will be well. More Chinese crap--and no american jobs_____ At some point it will crash. nature of the beast I think!!smokin
