THE BASILISK

The mythical king of the serpents. The basilisk, or cockatrice, is a creature that is born from a spherical, yolkless egg, laid during the days of Sirius (the Dog Star) by a seven-year-old rooster and hatched by a toad.

The basilisk could have originated from the horned adder or hooded cobra from India. Pliny the Elder described it simply as a snake with a golden crown. By the Middle Ages, it had become a snake with the head of a ****, and sometimes with the head a human. In art, the basilisk symbolized the devil and the antichrist. To the Protestants, it was a symbol of the papacy.

According to legend, there are two species of the creature. The first kind burns everything it approaches, and the second kind can kill every living thing with a mere glance. Both species are so dreadful that their breath wilts vegetation and shatters stones. It was even believed that if a man on horseback should try to kill it with a spear, the power of the poison conducted through the weapon would not only kill the rider, but the horse as well. The only way to kill a basilisk is by holding a mirror in front of its eyes, while avoiding to look directly at it. The moment the creature sees its own reflection, it will die of fright.

However, even the basilisk has natural enemies. The weasel is immune to its glance and if it gets bitten it withdraws from the fight to eat some rue, the only plant that does not wither, and returns with renewed strength. A more dangerous enemy is the rooster for should the basilisk hear it crow, it would die instantly.

The carcass of a basilisk was often hung in houses to keep spiders away. It was also used in the temples of Apollo and Diana, where no swallow ever dared to enter. In heraldry the basilisk is represented as an animal with the head, torso and legs of a rooster, the tongue of a snake and the wings of a bat. The snake-like rump ends in an arrowpoint.

Scripts are still being tweaked, casts are not yet finalised and filming hasn’t started yet, but I am here to give you a taster of the best of next year’s box office favourites.

The A-Team

What is it about? We’ve been waiting 25 years for this film. The iconic 80s TV series about a group of on-the-run, yet chivalrous, former soldiers is as brilliant today as it was when first broadcast.
(The DVD Box sets are essential viewing). A twenty-first century update means that the gang now comprises Gulf War survivors instead of Vietnam vets. While circumstances change the cast of characters and their goals remain the same. In other words cigar-chomping Hannibal Smith, smooth-talking Templeton “Face” Peck, ‘Howling Mad’ Murdoch and, of course, jive-talking BA Baracus are coming back.

Who is in it? A movie version of the show has been mooted for many years. The original cast is not in the frame and that means producers are going to have to try and replace the irreplaceable. The only confirmed names so far are Liam Neeson as Hannibal (good call) and Bradley Cooper as Face.

When will it be here? June 2010

******************************************************************************************************************************************

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1

What is it about? The seventh book in the Harry Potter series will be divided into two parts. The main motivation, of course, is to squeeze every last gold coin out of JK Rowling’s magical hat but it also gives us more Harry, so no complaints from us. There was so much in this story that we’re pleased it will be given chance to wrap up the narrative in he way it was intended. The story sees the Hogwarts gang step up the battle against ‘He who must not be named’ and a tragic departure for a much-loved character.

Who is in it? The usual mob are back and they’ll no doubt be joined by the next generation of Brit actors making up the supporting cast. We’re expecting a show-stealing performance from Rhys Ifans as the wonderfully-named Xenophilius Lovegood.

When will it be here? November 2010

******************************************************************************************************************************************

The Expendables

What is it about? A story written by, directed by and starring Sylvester Stallone has the potential to be dreadful. (Yes we remember Rocky but don’t you forget Cliffhanger, Cobra and Over The Top). But there is no doubt that we’ll be going to check this out. The plot surrounds a team of mercenaries sent to South America to overthrow a dictator. But really, it is all about the cast…
Who is in it? …which is the toughest ensemble since, well, ever. A line up that includes Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mickey Rourke, Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin and Jet Li is not going to be a breezy romantic comedy. This list, by the way, is just the main stars. There are dozens more tough guys who will make up the action.

When will it be here? April 2010

******************************************************************************************************************************************

The Green Hornet

What is it about? Immensely popular as both a comic book and TV show The Green Hornet has fallen down the pecking order of crime-fighting superheroes. Everybody knows Superman, Spider-man, Batman and the X-Men inside out, but the Green Hornet is no longer familiar to millions. (He is a mask-wearing journalist looking to avenge the death of a friend if you really can’t wait to find out).

Who is in it? Seth Rogen stars, the director is an alumni of Flight of The Conchords and its writer is formerly of the Ali G show: if this isn’t a comedy we’re not interested.

When will it be here? May 2010

******************************************************************************************************************************************

Robin Hood

What is it about? Ridley Scott is the latest director to bring English folk hero Robin Hood to the big screen. Having been secret fans of Kevin Costner’s turn as the Prince of Thieves we’re eager to see what the first major version of the story in 20 years adds to the mythology. Early reports suggested that this version may be sympathetic to the Sheriff of Nottingham but rumours are spreading through Hollywood that this line has been abandoned in favour of a more traditional approach.

Who is in it? Russell Crowe (Robin Hood), Cate Blanchett (Maid Marian), Vanessa Redgrave, William Hurt.

When will it be here? May 2010

******************************************************************************************************************************************

Iron Man 2

What is it about? We’ve always been big fans of Robert Downey Jr. at Time Out towers. We were delighted then that he got a major hit to call his very own in Iron Man. Part two is being worked on already and the only thing we know for sure is that he won’t be killed off (a second sequel is planned for release in 2013) and there will be a new super-heroine called Black Widow in the cast.

Who is in it? Robert Downey Jr. returns with Gwyneth Paltrow, Samuel Jackson and Don Cheadle. They’re joined by Scarlett Johansson for part two.

When will it be here? May 2010

******************************************************************************************************************************************

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

What is it about? An ambitious (read massive) remake of the popular video game franchise this Mike Newell-directed movie will be one of the big action adventures of next summer. The story follows a young street urchin taken into the royal family after showing great courage in a street fight.

Who is in it? Jake Gyllenhaal, Sir Ben Kingsley, Alfred Molina.

When will it be here? May 2010

******************************************************************************************************************************************

A Nightmare on Elm Street

What is it about? One-two Freddys after you, three-four we can’t remember any more. More than 25 years after the first nightmare, Freddy Kruger is back to disturb our sleep. The first installment was so scary we have a slightly worried feeling that the producers will try and raise the stakes in the gore front. Strictly for adults only we think.

Who is in it? Jackie Earle Haley, Rooney Mara, Kyle Gallner, Katie Cassidy.

When will it be here? April 2010

******************************************************************************************************************************************

Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of The Dawn Treader

What is it about? The third installment if the Narnia series sees the younger members of the Pevensie family return to the magical kingdom for more adventures. The action takes an aquatic twist as Edward and Lucy board the good ship Dawn Treader and embark on a voyage with dragons, lost warriors and merefolk.

Who is in it? Ben Barnes, Eddie Izzard, Skandar Keynes, Georgie Henley, Will Poulter.

When will it be here? December 2010

******************************************************************************************************************************************

The Clash of The Titans

What is it about? It can only be put down to the Lord of The Rings effect but there is a growing interest in swords and sorcery movies coming out of Hollywod right now. The lives and loves of Greek mythologies greatest gods will be very cool again when this remake of the 1981 classic of the same name is released. The originals showcased cutting edge animation effects by master monster maker Ray Harryhausen so we’re looking forward to seeing the developments.

Who is in it? Liam Neeson, Sam Worthington, Ralph Feinnes, Gemma Arterton.

The Clash of the Titans will be great to see redone with the new computer graphics we have today. This was one of the first fantasy movies that used clay figures adapted to actors in a fantasy greek mythology setting. A classic indeed.
