The government can't even run "cash for clunkers"

I looked into the details of it, thinking maybe I could go from my current huge wheelchair van (for my kiddo) to a smaller suv/minivan type vehicle but was sad to see they won't accept any deals where there is already a lien on the vehicle. The money would have almost payed off my loan and I could have started fresh with a car that got better gas mileage and had lower miles (or no miles even).

I feel bad for the dealers who are making all these sales. Who knows if they will even get their money back, and they are already in bad shape as it is.

I expect that this ridiculous plan Obama cooked up will put alot of car dealerships out of business. He is slowly but surely destroying what this country once represented. And now he wants the government to take over healthcare. We as American citizens are doomed.

one of the problems I'm reading about is the fact that the dealerships are required to destroy the clunkers traded in

millions of used cars are being taken off the market and will drive up the cost of the used cars available. It's gonna be impossible for lower income people to find $3000-$5000 used cars

I don't think the program was intended to help those who need it.
I have a friend who works at a dealership and he said the ones using the program were those who allready were looking to get a new car and could afford one. Getting 3,500 to 4,500 off the price was just the deal sealer for them.

I juat bought a new car 2 years ago. Wish they would have had that program then.

Maybee if I write Obama I can be grandfathered in and get 4,500 bucks?

The problem with crushing the trade in is, the dealer will not give you much for you car. The can't give you anything then have to destroy it.

I just hope there is "something" this new president can do right.

So far he hasn't been able too.........

Good luck America.

Cash for Clunkers has been a huge succsess. It has brought people into the market who would not have been able to afford a new car. It has returned auto workers to work who have been idle and created a market for the steel manufacturers, glass manufactures, plastics and wire harnessess you name it the auto industry uses it. The big uptick of course are those who work and pay taxes are now back to work and off the unemployment lines. This program has been a huge succsess and anyone who says its not is deluded. The Bush admin left this country in shambles and it is takeing drastic measures to shore it up and at least Obama has made an effort unlike the last administration that so fouled everything up.

You're right. And the sad thing is, people will blame him alone when there is plenty of blame to go around. :(

I wouldn't call the communist policies of Obama's admin a "fix" to Bush's fascism. More like another Statist failure magnifying the LONG string of failures of the past.

I think it's a good idea for those that were waiting for the bit of extra money to buy. However I am not sure I understand the point to crushing cars unless they are worthless to the used care industry.

I can't imagine anyone giving up a prefectly good car that could be sold as used and then use the money to buy the newer car. I might be missing something here but the idea itself doesn't bother me.

That is what they are doing. But the dealerships aren't getting the money from the government for the program.

It would be pointless top put a lot of dealerships out of business. And I would never be so hopelessly pessimistic to believe that America is Doomed, ever.

And please for heaven sakes educate yourself. No one is advocating the government take over of health care. At least get that much...

I would appreciate if you would refrain from telling anyone they need to educate themselves.

Yes they are not allways getting the money as fast as they should because its such a huge succsess they only set aside a billion it was eaten up in less than a week. It does take time for paper work to travel, many dealers gave the rebates themeselves ahead of the government check to make the sale. I dont expect anything this big to not have troubles. When it is all said and done alot of cars have been sold, alot of taxes paid and alot of people are back at work. I would be interested to know what your definition of failure is.

I didn't call it a failure. I simply posted an article stating dealers aren't getting the money.
Obviously the program wasn't organized and ran very well if they are running into this trouble.

The only trouble I see is it is working too well and ran out of money. Lots of cars sold and lots of people back to work makeing them. Just wondering though if the same logic applies to the wall street bailouts?
