Who portrayed the best Joker?
Cesar Romero Jack Nicholson Heath Ledger |

Lemme see....
Heath. Hands down. |

While I think Ledger did an excellent job, Jack Nicholson has always been my preference. He's got class and sophistication and when he becomes psychotic he is just many times more creepy than Ledger.

I liked it better when Joker was Penguin

Ceaser Romero IMO
But trying to compare them all is impossible. Diffy Jokers for diffy times |

Jack Nicholson, hands down, for me. Heath, too dark, and IMO didn't portray any sense of humor or playfulness, which was part of what makes the role so much fun. I liked Heath's portrayal and he did an admirable job, but I think Jack's portrayal encompassed the whole character better.

I enjoyed both Ledger and Nicholson's performances- but I'm always going to have a soft spot for Cesar Romero's. I grew up watching him in reruns and he's who I associated with the Joker for the longest time.
I also really enjoy Mark Hamill's voice over performance of The Joker. |

Nicholsen and Ledger did Joker bit parts in one movie each Romero kept up his Joker for a couple of years in full season of prime time TV |

Heath Ledger without a doubt. No one else has come close to playing "Joker" as a maniacal genius like he did. Bouncing back & forth between the sanity & insanity. I was literally on the edge of my seat in each 1 of his scenes, because you didn't know how he was going react next or how far he was going to go to make his point. His portrayal makes Jack's look a parody.
I liked Caesar Romero as Joker, but it's obvious if you have read any of the comic books, that his "Joker" was nowhere near how the character was portrayed. Besides, the TV Batman show was camp & a seriously twisted character just doesn't work in that arena. It's my opinion that Heath's performance was so spot-on, that it would have haunted him for the rest of his acting days. I don't think he would ever be able to top his work in "Dark Knight". |

Jack or Heath. They are IMPOSSIBLE to compare and chose a better one. They both portrayed very different types of Joker's with very different back stories and motivations. Well, we never knew for sure the back story and motivation for Heath's Joker. But that was part of what make the character so intensely creepy and haunting. It was the stuff of which nightmares are made.
But Jack pulled off the humor element of the Joker that was missing from Heath's version. Which makes me lean towards Jack as being the best Joker. Maybe the "truest" would be a better work. He grasped it more and fulfilled the character. Whereas Heath redefined it into something very different. |

While I think Ledger did an excellent job, Jack Nicholson has always been my preference. He's got class and sophistication and when he becomes psychotic he is just many times more creepy than Ledger. bingo. he created that angry insane laughable character that was the joker from the early comics and made him what he was. a joke. |

i wasnt really a fan of Jack's Joker, not really sure why, but for some reason it bothered me. i was insanely impressed with Ledger's Joker though. subdued, yet completely insane, but without being forced and over the top about it.

Ditto. Also to Moondark, remember they've been trying to update the series so it more accurately reflects the later darker versions of Batman. To that end, even the animated versions on Cartoon Network portray Joker as someone closer to Heath's version than Jack's. Look at Batman Beyond or even the latest version of Batman playing on CN. Maybe it is a matter of different decades, different Jokers. Still, in my book, Heath set the standard. |

Heath Ledger... Such an awesome performance and easily stole the movie... By the end I didn't even care about Batman anymore.
