Its all preference. My first concert I ever seen was black sabbath and blue oyster cult in 1976. Black n blue tour. BOC was a no show. Black sabbath came to bat like noones business in full fury and played for 5 freaking balls out hours- ran out of material and played covers. Bill ward was a concise madman of precision beyond compare and left everyone breathless, speechless, and bewildered in what they witnessed and experienced. In their live version of "Symptoms of the universe" bill played 4 to 7 beats inside a common beat with ozzy going nuts and swinging on equipment like a monkey while geezer and tony punched down the thrashing strangling volumeous grind at stage shaking volumes. They made the solo last a good 20 minutes and back into the song. Then as the song ends and jives into a swing beat bill goes into this jazzy bluesy buddy rich, kruppa, carmine appice, jazz flash tribute thing that's beyond description. And as he faded out of that and the beat slowed down to an incredible crescendo of just one beat- that one beat was the first beat and chord to the song "War pigs". And black sabbath did the best rendition anyone has ever seen of that on that night with bill ward playing absolutely the strangest and most wildest structures I've ever seen. Crescendos inside standards. Trills outside of partials. Timing inside of different timing inside of yet different timing. 2/4 into 2/8 into 4/4 into 1/9. He was doing everything that astronomically was impossible with incredible precision beyond compare. To this day I've never ever seen a drummer play like bill ward did that night. And yes I've seen rush and many others. In 1999 I got to have dinner with ozzy, tony, geezer, and bill. And I told bill about my first concert and that night at the met and how that was the most amazing drumming and percussion show and concert I have ever witnessed. They all laughed and remembered that night and declared that "Quite a bit of fun for all". The irony I explained was that not long after they played at the indoor met stadium, it was torn down. They saved one solid concrete wall from the stadium to build a structure beyond compare. The famous mall of america. The 6 story mammoth shop till you drop epitamy of retail stores. As I ate dinner with black sabbath in the chinese restaurant at the mall of america I pointed to that one wall and said "Behind that wall I seen the best freaking concert performance by black sabbath I ever seen in my life in 1976". Ozzy in true form started in with the "You gotta be ****!ng kidding me mate! They saved a ****!ng wall from the met to bbbbbb build this place? Oh we gotta get a picture"! That picture hangs on my wall. Bill ward is the best drummer percussionist I've ever seen.

Nick Menza-Megadeath Nico Mcbrain-Iron Maiden Just a couple i thought warranted a mention here Best Rock drummer hmmmmm dunno and I can play a mean parradiddle myself. Buddy Rich is prob best drummer of any genre. I like the styles of Mcbrain, Lars (Metallica) I also like Clive Barr and for his sheer drive and power Phil Rudd even though he is not flash. |
