and ridiculing another human being IS a good example to set for British school girls? Do you seriously think I would say this to a bunch of impressionable girls? Please credit me with a bit more tact. |

I did not take it too personally, just pointing out the negative effects ladies like Mrs Beckham and Katie Price are having on our young girls. It is the week-end and I have to write a report of an incident that happened in the school on Thursday, a girl was seen taking pills in the play area,I went to investigate and and discovered she had taken diet pills............. She is 10 years old.I think these "stars" could do a lot for children if she would promote healthy lifestyles, after all, youngsters are great at copying adults. |

i guess all of society has a role to play in giving our young adults a positive outlook on their body image; however, i think the role of a star falls far below that of a parent, an educator, a doctor.
i was never influenced by movie stars, probably because i had (have) great parents who encouraged me and inflated my self-esteem. my own daughters don't put much emphasis on their body image, besides knowing that it's important to eat well and excercise often. perhaps because victoria beckham is such a big personality in britain, she is constantly in the media, and in their faces, she plays a bigger role to young kids? however, here in north america, in comparison to the other twits out there in hollywood - the druggies, the drunk drivers, etc., she seems to play a pretty minor role and isn't ever in the news doing something illegal, but rather i see her portrayed as a good mother, and a good wife, who, besides being severely underweight, looks pretty not bad to me. there are a lot of severely overweight stars who don't look natural to me either; but i don't hear of anyone saying that they should be setting a healthier lifestyle to more positively effect our youth. |

My dear lady you would be amazed and maybe appalled ( like I am most days) the adoration heaped upon minor "stars" I speak from experience when I say this:it is a daily and constant battle to get children to be attentive to their lessons, the majority of them feel they will excel in superstardom because they look "hot" have the ability to balance a football on their head or ( the latest one ) think they know enough about cars to have their own "Pimp My Ride" tv show. Then there are those who want to be the next Jade Goody ( a reality show "star" who sadly passed away in April.Children (especially girls) say "Miss, you do not have to have a qualification these days to earn a living, look at Jade etc,etc ( and name the latest minor "start who is then flavour of the month.
Sure, parents have a responsibility to raise their children to be upstanding future citizens, sadly ( on the increase) this is not happening. Teaching used to be a straight forward career, over the past 15 or so years, teachers have had to take Continuing Professional Development courses and these include, counseling, welfare work and the like. Some parents would rather buy the latest pair of jeans, trainers, sunglasses ( now the summer's here) than buy a £5 per month book club membership because "Johnny does not need it Miss, he wants to be a football star" And yes, you are correct, Victoria is big news here ( in fact anyone who appears on television, except newscasters, that requires reading;fluently) Very much like yourself, I was never influenced by celebrity fever............... According to my mum, "from the sweat of thy brow thou shall eat bread" we had to work for all we had and have and I instilled the same into my children. On the "how do I look front" my daughter is thin and so is my son but they both have my genes, I am ( by nature) a thin person. Yet my daughter does not see her "potential" according to her friends, she is more interested in studies and is studying to be a dentist. She thinks learning is a wonderful thing ( oh my, do I sound as though I am bragging? So sorry, just a proud mum who felt she has done her best under the given circumstances of today's culture of "get rich quick teens)It is quite a worrying phenomena. |

Oh, they have had their fair of bashing too. The British Government has spent millions on adverts promoting "me" sized meals and warning parents not to over feed their children, |

IMO . . . |
