Topic: would someone having a mental illness put you off dating the | |
---|---|
I have schizophrenia and would really like some opinions on this. Say you met someone, went on a couple of dates and liked them, then they told you. How do you think you would react?

Honestly, it wouldn't matter. We are talking a couple of dates. I think I would continue dating and see what would happen.
Now if it doesn't work out, would you think it is because of this? |

Please do get the help you need...my x husband has it too but is unmedicated...my life with him was horrible. So always understand you are easily treated but stay on the meds...and I do wish you the best.

If the person also said they had no plan of treatment or took steps to better themselves, yup it would be a dealbreaker. Even with meds I'd be very wary.

In all seriousness, I've wondered about that myself. I have acute depression and epilepsy that was diagnosed a couple of years ago after a lifetime of struggle. I was embarrased about it for awhile because of the stigma attached to mental illness. I've come to terms with it now but it still kinda makes me nervous about dating. Hell, its out there now so I guess we will both see what opinions come down this thread.
Have been medicated since my diagnoses, would not even think of going a day with out them. I remember what it was like before, not goin there again. |

None of my previous relationships finished because i have schizophrenia so no. But if it was the reason that someone finished things I would be quite hurt I think. |

I once considered a guy who was schizophrenic.. he refused to take his meds, and was ashamed of his condition. He tweeked out on me, and then kept sending me angry out of the blue texts likeit was a subject anymore long after I stopped talking to him.
Everyone is different.. nah, not a dealbreaker, but someone definitely has to take theyre medication, and seek all the therapy they need. I would be a cheerleader if so. People cant help theyre conditions, heart problems, kidney, liver, mental illness, but proper medical help is very very important. Ive also dated people with anxiety, depression, ocd. Not an uncommon thing that people have mental issues. Love is love. |

I'm well medicated and lead a very full life, currently studying for a degree in criminology and psychological studies, so nobody panic! |

I have schizophrenia and would really like some opinions on this. Say you met someone, went on a couple of dates and liked them, then they told you. How do you think you would react? I think it would really freak-out cetain people. I would try to find out their knowledge of mental illness if any. I think I would give if more than a few dates, let them get to know you. Hmmm...this is a tough one. It would involve teaching/educating about mental illness. I have worked as a psychiatric nurse and it is a very complex disorder, the average person may not have all the information they need. |

If you have that whole deal under control, its really noones business, i wouldnt go broadcasting it until it was actually a factor. People dont show up going.. "I have hemmroids". |

You know, and really, if someone has a problem with it, good deal, your lucky to have gotten rid of them as quickly as u did, even if you had invested some time.

In my opinion everyone has some form of mental illness or another, it just does not have a name and a set of control medications.

There are varying degrees of the illness. There are also different side affects to the medications. |

To broadcast or not to broadcast? When one faces the possibility of prejudice does one hide in the closet or wear it on ones sleeve? Honesty and understanding right from the outset breeds mutual respect amongst the worthy just in case the subject becomes unavoidable as it does sometimes. I own my schizophrenia, no one else, just me.
